Remington SPR94
Anyone have any experience with this firearm (Remington SPR94)? My friend is wanting to buy one and would like some input if anyone uses it for hunting applications. He is wanting the 12ga/.223...

RE: Remington SPR94
It looks like a neat little gun. You say your friend want the 12/223 combo? I would think it would be a great little coyote/varmitgun, you could use the 223 part for most shots and the 12ga if they're up close and on the move. You could use it for deer too, but I'd want a scope to get the most out of that 223 barrel. Thebiggest fault I can see with it is that combo is almost twice as expensive as the other ones. You could get a lot more gun for that price IMO.
I've only handled them in gun stores, if they were cheaper, I think they would be more popular. Beware of "do all" guns, sometimeswhen you need a hammer, a multi-tool won't cut it.Still, like I said, they're pretty neat. |
RE: Remington SPR94
I own a Savage 24F in .223/12 and I love this gun. A friend of mine bought the SPR94 at the same time and he's been very happy with the gun. Ipersonally prefer the hammer and single trigger of the Savage and he likes the SPR94 for the same reasons. It's not the best .223 or the best 12ga. but IMO the combo is the best all around gun I could ask for. With a good selection of chokes and a good scope for the .223 I am able to handle most any hunting needs. Wish your friend the best if he decides to go the combo way.

If you look a page or two back, I asked a similar question and I'm not convinced that these Rem combos are all that strong a gun.
First off...the .223 is on the BOTTOM of the 12ga/.223 combo. That means your scope is actually mounted on the barrelof the shotgun...the barrel that will be used at closer range. Upon investigation, that is a Russian thing left over from the Biakal days. Many of the owners have the same complaint that the Savage model 24 owners have...If the rifle is sighted in properly, the shotgun is a foot or so off, or vise versa. I'm passing on both for now. I've owned Savage 24's and they're OK...but not what I want in a varmint weapon. |

ORIGINAL: Pro-Line If you look a page or two back, I asked a similar question and I'm not convinced that these Rem combos are all that strong a gun. I've owned Savage 24's and they're OK...but not what I want in a varmint weapon. The reasonnearly allSavages and SPR's don't shoot both bbls to the sights is because they are "poorly regulated" and both of thosebrands "could" be regulated properly, "IF" the mfg's would just take the time to do so! RE: Remington SPR94
I have defend the Savage 24f here. The 24 has the .223 on top and the 12ga. on bottom. I use the iron sights for the shotgun and they are dead on at 100 yards with the ammo I use(Managed Recoil Buckhammers), with the .223 I use a scope and see-thru rings and get very good accuracy. As I have said not the best .223 or the best 12ga., but more than enough for what I need. I seldom meet someone who has owned a combo who doesn't still own it and love it or got rid of it and regret that they did.

RE: Remington SPR94
DM...You're right...the manufacturers could make them more accurate...but they could NEVER make them truly accurate because the rifle and shotgun have a different trajectory. If they had a point of impact in mind...they could have them line up there. BUT, there would only be 1 or 2 (MAX) places that a 12ga and a .223 will meet. If the manufacturer were to say "I want these barrels to be dead nuts together at 100yds..." then that would be possible. If they want them to be dead nuts at 25yds and 125yds...That's impossible.
My reason for saying that the rifle should be on top is because the rifle would be used for longer shots and be under tighter specs than the shotgun..BUT, I'm thinking of shooting shot out of the shotgun. If you were to want to shoot slugs, then it makes no matter which barrel is where. SAVAGE1's statement makes sense...use the scope for the rifle and the see-through for the shotgun. It would work. Pain in the ass, but it would work. |
RE: Remington SPR94
Well, having the bbl that has the "highest" pressure round on the bottom is better for the action... It allows you to fire higher pressure rounds, like a 30-06.
I don't have one problem with the rifle bbl being on the bottom of my Valmets, and i can easily/quickly regulate the rifle bbls to any point of aim i want. Sighting the slugs in at 50 or 75 yards, and then regulateing the rifle at 100 works out just fine on a big game gun. I've had no problem making some fairly long shots with the rifle bbls on my combo's, and i'm completely satisfied with there performance. ![]() I have no use for see through mts. on any of my guns... I much prefer to have a reliable quick detach mount system, that allows me to take the scope off or put it on at any time with it going back to zero perfectly... It just wouldn't cost Savage that much more to do it right in the first place... The Savage 2400's (made by Valmet)Savage sold, had it 99% right, all they have to do today is copy those guns! DM |
RE: Remington SPR94
DM...I totally agree that you can get a happy medium with the point of aim...BUT, like you said it is in the hands of the manufacturer. They need to make every caliber/combo differently to compensate for different trajectories. Savage and Remington are too cheap.
You're right about the pressure...if you're talking about larger calibers. I'm talking .223, so that's not an issue. Maybe I'll just look for a Valmet. LOL And I've never been a fan of see through mounts. Anytime you move your scope farther from your barrel, and have to crane your neck...it's not the best situation. |
