$600 to spend on a shotgun?

I have about $600 to spend on a shotgun and want to know your opinions. I would prefer a semi auto, but know that price will limit my choices. This gun will be mainly used for turkey hunting, but I would like to be able to shoot skeet or birds with it also. I would also like the gun to be camo. Thanks for your opinions.

Stoeger 2000and the Remington 11-87 Sportsman sold at Walmart, Beretta 390s are sold in Walmart you would have to camo it but that is no big deal.

Bass Pro has the Remington 11-87 on sale for $699 right now and is two toned in black and camo. You might want to check it out. As far as shotguns go, it would either have to be a Remington or a Bennelli for me.

They also have the Benelli Super Nova for $549 on sale in all camo but I do not know if it is semi-auto or not?

If you look around, you should be able to find a used Benelli Super 90 in your price range.

I got mine in July and I like it a lot. I wrote up a range report on it here...Stoeger 2000 Range Report

Mine is the plain black synthetic version, which was less than $400. The make it in a couple different camo versions which are about $75 more. Then also offer a pistol grip stock if you prefer one for turkey hunting. Mine has the standard stock as I intend it to be an all-purpose shotgun.

RE: $600 to spend on a shotgun?

For those of you that have mentioned the Stoeger's have you had any issues with them? Another thing is I have to buy this at a local gun shop because I have $300 in gift cards to it, so the Bass Pro and other sales are out. This place is basically MSRP on their guns and do not have many used guns.

Anyone have a Mossberg 835 or 935 and care to comment?

Thanks
BJ

eh, Mossbergs aren't bad shotguns, it's just that anything that you get after that like Remington or Benelli is usually considered an upgrade. Did they have any Stoegers? I think a few people commented on how affordable and good they were? If I were you though, and I'm not, I would look to see if they have a Benelli Nova.

RE: $600 to spend on a shotgun?

Beneli Nova are a pump, not a semi. The Stoger 2000 is made by Beneli and has their inertia system in it. I have never owned one, but I have shot them and I have several friends that shoot them with zero issues.

I've had zero problems with my Stoeger and I don't baby it at all. You'll be happy with it and save $180. I'd use $60 of that money to put a nice Turkey sight on it. I like the Tru-Glo Universal Turkey sight with the rear ghost ring. Excellent site for the money.

I prefer the mossburg 930. It has been pretty dependable and has a nice action.

RE: $600 to spend on a shotgun?

Thanks for the input so far. I looked at a Stoeger and a Benelli side by side today and the guns are almost identical except for the actions are made of different metals and the Benelli's was polished. I may go this route as I used a friends Benelli to hunt turkey this past year and it seemed to be a fine gun. They didn't have a Mossberg Auto in stock as someone had come in and bought both of the ones they had yesterday, so I am going to wait to look at one of them and make my decision.

The Stoeger is a fine semi auto as is the Charles Daly semi auto both offered in camo. Try a Gun Show in your area you can usually pick up a pretty good deal on a New or Used semi .
GOOD LUCK !!

A few years back I went to buy a Mossberg 935, but couldn't put the Benelli Super Black Eagle down, so I pissed my wife off and spent an extra $500...

Either the Moss or a tried and true Rem Wing Master, which can double a canoe oar their built so good!

RE: $600 to spend on a shotgun?

All I can comment on is my Remington 870 Super Express Magnum or whatever the one that shots 3 1/2" shells is. I do not like it at all and have had nothing but issues with it. On 2 3/4 shells which it is supposed to be able to shoot it seems to lock up on usually the third shot but not always to where the pump wont move after shooting it. You can't move it to eject it. Usually if you put the stock on the ground and kind of hit on the pump hard it will finally move and eject the shells. It doesn't seem to have this issue with 3" or 3 1/2" shells but it seems to just randomly jam with them. The thing probably jams 5 times out of every 20 shots. Maybe not quite that much but I'd be it's close. I then had a shell explod in the chamber which I think was a bad shell. I quit using Remington shells after that and took it into the gun shop I bought it from and told them the issues. They cleaned it and looked it over and said everything looked fine so they didn't know why it was jamming. This gun has been a piece of junk since I bought it. I Think I want a Benelli Super Black Eagle next time. I tried to save a bit by buying a Remington and it was a mistake. I wish I had just gone ahead and spent the money on a nice gun.

I know several people though that have 870's and all love them. That's why I got mine but I think I got a lemon.

Another guy I hunt with has a Remington 11-87 semi auto. It might not jam as often as mine but that thing seems to want to jam fairly often too. I don't understand how these things jam this often where as I have like my Browning BAR with hundreds of bullets through it since I've had it and never once jammed.

I have started to not like Remington stuff at all. I have several older guns that are fine but this shotgun and then their shells I've had bad luck with.

Get a used Beretta 391 or save a few more bucks for it. Softest shooting and most reliable auto out there. Benelli is recoil operated and will give a bit of a beating.

RE: $600 to spend on a shotgun?

Well thought I would give you an update on my decision. I actually decided to buy a Remington SPR453 that the store I had gift cards to had on sale. They hold a big sale each year during October and I ended up getting it for $318 with tax for a brand new gun. I looked up some reviews of this gun and even though it isn't camo it seems to be an ok gun for what I gave for it. I got a couple of boxes of Winchester Expert Hi Velocity Steel Shoot 3.5 inch #2's to break it in when I get a chance to head over to my dad's. Wal Mart had these shells on sale for $10 a box so they should be ok to break the gun in. I will let you know how it groups up after I get it broke in. On top of it all now I have money to buy myself a new scope for my rifle. Thanks for all your help.

Isn't that the semi-auto with the chrome action? I was looking at that one a little while back. Looks like a great gun for the price.

i don't know what they run now, but i bought my Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag (camo with no panzy muzzle break) for about $350.00 brand new. it is still my most dependable shotgun. i've shot turkey's, deer and hogs with it and it has been flawless. no jams or malfunctions even when it's been dropped in the sand, used as a paddle and used to beat cotton mouths away in the swamp. i shoot the 3 1/2" rounds out of it when i use it for deer, turkey or hogs and 3" rounds for dove. the ONLY improvement i done to mine was put fiber optic sights on it. i've had it for over 10 years and firmly believe i'll never buy another shotgun because it is undestructible.

Personally, i'd go with a Benelli Nova 12-Guage Pump. I have one and i use it for waterfoul, turkey, pheasant, and quail. It is just an all around good gun.
