Advise on a .243
I won a Remington Model 715.243 at a Delta Waterfowl Banquet and I need a little info on it. I am wondering what the effective range for whitetails is? What is the best load for it?Is bigger better, the biggest I could fine was 105 grain? I come from slug gun heritage and you want to talk about knock down.. Let me know any info you might have that will help me on the up coming whitetail season. Thanks..

The 243 is a great whitetail round. Its effective range is about 400 yards and accuracy range far beyand that. A bullet from 85gr to 105gr will be well suited for whitetail though you might want to go on the heavier side if you plan of longer distances. The main this is get a few different boxes of ammo and see whick one you gun likes.

I've used it for 25 or so years. Everything I fed it killed deer. federal 85gr hollow points, federal 100 gr sierra game kings, federal 100 gr nosler partition, remington 100 gr core loks, 80gr core locks, hronady 100 gr Btsp, winchester 100 gr sp.
Just find what your gun likes. If I had to chose I would try the Hornady customs, 100 gr.

Bad influence I have been thinking 6.5 something or another for a few weeks but the thought of owning a nice 243 might be just as good.

Dang Rebel I like the way you think lol. Me and my dad are huge fans of those little calibers for hunting(.243,25-06,6.5-06 ) those are what we use the most. And I am a huge Ruger fan . I would have to say the .243 is more capable of killing deer at distance then the avg. shooter/hunter is . No disrespect but the avg. hunter doesnt go out and punch paper @300 yrds. or even know what his bullet is doing at that distance. I have seen my dad take 2 out of 3 does at 375 yards running across a field . and saw him on 2 seprate occasions take deer at 500 yards with his 243 and 87gr bullets. So I like to not so much put the "effective range " tag on the gun or caliber , but more on the shooter.
