New 300 WSM!

I needed to get a new rifle, so I can pass my 35 Rem to my son who will be old enough to deer hunt next season. I've been reading posts on this board and corresponding with some of you, and based on that info, I ordered a left-handed Savage Model 16 (synthetic stock - stainless) 300 WSM. I know some of you are skeptical of that caliber, but those of you who have them seem to like them, so I'm going to give it a try. Your critical discussions helped me give the situation a full evaluation. Most of all, your discussions about Savage rifles have given me the confidence to purchase one, since Savage is the only company that will sell me a left-handed 300 WSM. I'll let you know what I think when I get it in. Then, next fall, my son and I will go on our first deer hunt together! Thanks for your help!

I am aghast! I had no idea that Savage was even chambering for this caliber yet. I knew they were chambering the Lazzeroni but didn't know about the WSM.

Enjoy hunting with your son. It is a special experience when he sees his first deer in the woods. But the real rush comes when he takes his first one, as my son did at age 11 sitting next to me in a stand. I don't know who was more suprised when he hit it with my old .243 -- me or the deer!

I think you made a wise disision booches. I love mine. I'm glad you found one in a left handed model. I wish i would have gotten one like that. But im happy with my right handed model. the accuracy is better, in my opion, than the win. and the rem. only thing i worried about was the recoil. I have savages kick my a$$ on recoil but i was suprised to see it wasnt bad at all. Good luck and let us know how it goes

BOOCHES, ARE YOU SURE YOU CAN'T GET THE WSM IN A BROWNING? I TO AM LEFT HANDED, AND TWO OF MY LAST THREE HAVE BEEN MEDALIONS.

BIGGUN300, I called Browning directly, and they told me they wouldn't have any left handed WSMs until 2003 or 2004. I was disappointed, because I had pretty much decided to get an A-Bolt, but I really wanted a left handed model. If you find this to be incorrect let me know, although I assume it is too late for me this year.

sshunter: I wish I was teasing. Maybe I'm naive, but that's what the lady told me. he companies made the decision for me.When I was through asking Winchester, Browning, Ruger and Savage if the were builkding 300 WSM in left-handed rifles, Savage was the only one who responded affirmatively. I thought about waiting a couple of months to see if Browning had changed its mind, but after reading about Savages on this board, I thought the Savage would be an economical way for me to learn if I liked the caliber (and if I really want to use a left-handed bolt.) I may love the Savage and hold. I may decide I like the caliber and/or the left handed bolt, but decide I want the smoother action of a Browning and trade up when it offers what I want. For now, I'm awfully excited about the Savage!
