POWER UP GRADE!!!!!

Ok,Here is my question.
I have a Ruger MkII Ultra light in 308 win,can I have it rechambered to 338 Federal or 358 Win. ?

I like my elk rifle to have some meat to them but this little gunis so light handi and fast pointing. It think it would mke a AWSOME timber rifle with 20" tube.
I would realy like to try/shoot the .338 Fed first but form the charts it would make a nice elk rifle.
I had a BLR in .358 once that was a devestating deer/bear gun(another I wish I had back) but sold due to some fiscal problems way back when.
OR
Can I have a rebarle jobbie done on it(how much dose that cost?).I have a .338 Win Mag and a .300 Win,Ultra/Short/WBY and H&H among other good to great elk rifles.
Just want to make a good gun GREAT!!!
Thanks
BBJ

I dont see where you would have a problem with it. The 338 Fed is based off the 308 cartridge so it should work fine.

Can you have it rechambered... No. Well, you could but it sure as heck wouldn't be worth the cost and likely wouldn't produce acceptable accuracy.

Can you have it rebarrelled... absolutely. Cost would depend on the barrel maker you choose but labor would likely run you about $150 - $200 for installation.

Another option is to have the bbl that's on it "rebored"... I've had excelent service out of rebored bbls, and the guy that's done the most of them for me is Randy Redman, athttp://www.redmansrifling.com/

Randy is a great guy that doesexcelent work!!

What I'm worried about is the barrel to thin? since it is a ultra-light barrel.

Thats what I was thinking was rebore, but isn't that the same as rechambering? exscuse my stupidity.

Rebore involves drilling out the barrel and recutting riflng to the different diameter..you will have pretty much the same chamber dimensions (308,338,358 based on same)which will have to be cleaned up as well.

I don't think your going to have enough meat on the barrel to rebore it although reboring usually works really well. If you go replacment barrel the contour will probably be a little heavier and then you will have to open the stock a little bit . That might or might not affect the balance negatively. I would look for a lightweight 338 federal possibly a Ruger Hawkeye in 338 or 358 winchester, T3 lite in 338 Federal and or a Kimber 84M in 338 Federal

Rechambering is just that... Running a reamer in the chamber and changeing it to a bigger cartridge...

Reboreing is "boreing" the hole in the bbl out to a bigger size, and re-rifleing it to a bigger caliber...

Caliber is REALLY about the diameter of the bullet, and the CARTRIDGE is really is about what case that holds the powder is used to drive that bullet.

Your origional question asked about going from a .308 Win. to a .338 Federal. (.308" to .338") What is needed to do that is, to to bore out the 308 to 338... Then run a neck reamer in the chamber to get the bigger neck of the Federal...
