you really shouldn't use buckshot in a rifled barrel

Yes you can but i would not recomend it. And there is the fact you wont get a decent pattern. The spin in the barrel will not let the buckshot stabilize properly to get a good pattern.

It won't hurt it, but it won't pattern worth a darn. Might be ok for real close defense shooting, but would probably be worthless for hunting. I'm not a big fan of buckshot anyway though.

Just because it's a cantilever barrel does not mean it's rifled...A cantilever barrel has the scope mount on the barrel and it goes over the receiver...

Now...Is the barrel rifled??? That will determine if the preceding answers are relevent...

I've never tried buckshot out of a rifled barrel, but I've killed a few truckloads of deer with buckshot out of a smooth barrel...It's deadly, just have to know what you are doing...

One might would think that the riflings in the barrel would spin the shot cup and better stabilize it.Would it react the same way with smaller shot, say #9s or does it spin the cup off to fast ?

It does the opposite Swamp. It will spin the shot making it spread faster and leaving a big hole in the middle of the pattern. I have experimented with different chokes, rifled barrels and different size shot looking for a good defense load. Shooting shot out of a rifled barrel is completely useless. You would have be so close for it to have any effect you could just beat the person with the gun instead;).

He is right, you CAN do it. It just won't work worth a darn is all.
