I have to get a new rifle

I’ve just been thrust into the market for a new rifle. Last weekend I was the winner of a Ruger M77 MKII in 338 Winchester Mag. Poor me:D. This is far too much gun for me but luckily the shop is willing to swap. Since I have not purchased a new rifle for several decades, I’m not familiar with the different makes. I’m partial to controlled round feed but not apposed to getting a rifle with push feeding as long as my other criteria are met. I’m considering the 270 WSM as far as chambering is concerned but am open to others. I already have a 30-06. I think the most important feature is a good trigger or one that can be made to be easily. Any suggestions?

Since you have a 30-06 already, maybe a 7MM Rem. mag might be a choice.
A 7MM-08 or .260 would give you a lighter deer rifle or maybe a varmint caliber like the .223 or 22-250! Choices, choices! I wish I were so lucky! Good luck!

I' d like to be in your shoes. If you' re not inclined to keep the M77 .338, check out the Win 70 Compact Classic in. 7mm.08 - a sweet little rifle. gg.

I don' t know what you' d be using this for but since you have the 06 and that can be loaded to handle almost anything. How about .300 Win Mag or Quillys favorite 35Whelen

Have you ever heard of/looked at Tikka?
If you want a good out of the box trigger then look no further

AAA,
I prefer Winchesters, but thats just me! The Rugers, Brownings, Tikkas, and Savages are all good too. The Remmington 700 is still a good gun too, I guess! I haven' t shot any of the newer 700' s.
If all this free new gun stuff gets to be too much for you, you can always defer your pick to me! I' ll shoulder the burden for you!:D:D:D

AAA..

since you already own a 30-06sprg. what about a nice 25-06rem or for those large hogs a nice 35whelen LOVE MINE:D. controlled feed are nice but i think are more of a need for them when hunting dangerous game.
look into a nice browning medallion in the 25-06rem . i have two brownings and will never buy any other guns besides them. nice 60 degree bolt nice finish and both guns shoot the best out of all the guns i ever owned.

BTW. brownings' triggers can be easily adjusted. mine came set at about 3.5lbs.

How about a .223 WSSM? or .243 WSSM? They should be out soon if you have a little time.

Do yourself a favour & check out tikkas.

I just bought one in 7mm-08 & I am impressed,It was very accurate out of the box,is light, the action is so smooth, ammo feeds so well from the mag & it is great to use.

Make sure you have a look at them.

The 270 WSM in a Win. M-70 sounds good. Good luck

Don' t know what caliber you have in mind or what your going to be hunting with it but, here is what I just finished putting together
Remington 700 VLS
22-250 cal. Topped off with a set of Millet 2 piece scope mount and a
6-24x40 varminter scope from BSA optics. This all sets on a Harris adjustable bipod with sling. :D Now this gun is SWEEEEEEEEEET;)

I second the 22-250 vote. With a 22-250 and a 30-06 you are set for anything on this continent. Of course that don,t mean you can,t get more.:D

RE: I have to get a new rifle

Well I finally spoke to the shop owner and he is willing to swap for something comparable to the Ruger if he has it in stock. As the Ruger is a plain synthetic stocked rifle (inexpensive) and was purchased at cost, my options will be limited. I don' t have much extra money to add to get something better and still get a scope and trigger work if need (the Rugers trigger was a bit sloppy). I don’t need or want a varmint gun because I already have a .222 and 6mm. I also have a .308 lever action and a 32 Winchester special. I mostly hunt Mulies with an occasional Elk. I was leaning toward the .270 WSM to get a little extra reach but Ruger does not chamber this round. Depending on what the shop has in stock I might get a 7mm Mag (this being about as powerful as I want to get). If “cost” of the Winchester is comparable to the Ruger I think I will try working that deal and get the 270 WSM. Decisions, decisions…:D

AAA,
Do you need a rimfire by any chance? Ruger makes some excellent .22 and .22 mag bolt action and semi auto .22 and .22 mag rifles. Most of them are as much as a centerfire. It would be a good chance to get a fairly expensive rimfire if you want one.

clearanceman, I have 3 already.

Ok. If I were you, I would sell the new rifle you won then. It seems like you really don' t need a new rifle as you have everything covered. $ is always nice to have also. And then later if you need a handgun or whatever, you can buy it.

Sell the new rifle, what are you a communist?:)

7mm Mag.

Sounds like you know what you want already. I really like what the .270WSM has to offer, but I tried to price the ammo compared to .270 Win. Problem I came across was FINDING WSM ammo. Right now, not everyone loads WSMs.

From what I' ve seen, the 7mag and .270WSM are comparable in performance, but if you are ever in B.F.E. and need ammo, any Wal-Mart or sporting goods retail store will have 7Mag rounds. Same can' t be said for the WSMs.

LOL! But sometimes that is the best option if you can' t figure out what you want. I don' t think I have ever sold a sold.... well, just once!!

It seems you already have a deer rifle, Why not have some fun , trade it on a Ruger mini -14 [:-]

AAA 03-20-2003 02:22 PM

RE: I have to get a new rifle

If I was going just for fun I would lean more to another lever action. I don' t need another lever gun. Since my main deer gun is an old sporterized Springfield I was just thinking of getting something with more reach than my 06 but not a cannon. It’s all going to depend on what the shop has in stock when I go next Wednesday to pick it out. I have already filled out my paperwork and the 10 day wait will be up on Wednesday (California waiting period). It’s kind of exciting not knowing what I’m going to get but what ever it turns out to be I will get to take it home immediately.

AAA,

I' m gonna have to give my " vote" for the Win. Model 70 270 WSM. I would get that setup b/c it' s new and it' s faster than the 270 Win.:D

ELKampMaster 03-20-2003 07:19 PM

RE: I have to get a new rifle

AAA,
Sounds like you have a right fair rack of rifles without the newcomer! Looks like you have the mid range calibers well covered! I kind of like the recommendation of a 22-250 to fill in your lower end, but if that' s not your style, then I understand.

Any possibility you would reconsider keeping the one you won? You said it was too much gun for you -- is that assumed or from real experience? 338 with 200grs is quite managable AND is flat and fast. If you reload you can always do reduced loads and approximate a 338-06 (an easy going 338 cartridge). If as you said you hunt an occasional elk, then it' s hard to beat a 338. Plus if you get a wild hair one day and want to go to Alaska, then you are all set. Everyone should have at least one " bad boy" in the back of the gun safe for special ocassions.

Never Go Undergunned,
EKM

ELKampMaster,
In my younger days I developed a pretty bad flinch with the 06. It has taken many years and concentration to work it out. I feel that with a hard kicking gun I would have a good chance of flinching again.

RE: I have to get a new rifle

I like Robert Scott' s recommendation. The .270 WSM will take deer and elk cleanly to any responsible range. The recoil is manageable, even for someone like me who is extremely sensitive to it.

For something a bit smaller, I like the .260 Rem.

RE: I have to get a new rifle

I got my new rifle. The dealer was not as accommodating as I thought he would be. He was only going to give me $350 credit for the Ruger when I know $435 was paid by the Mule Dear foundation. And If I picked anything but a Ruger I was going to have to pay retail. Needless to say I just picked a different caliber Ruger. I did not have much money to add in to get a better gun. My choices where 223, 22-250, 308, 30-06, 300Win Mag and 25-06. I chose the 25-06. The 300 Win Mag has too much recoil for me, I have a 30-06 and a 308. I’m a little disappointed I could not afford a 270WSM or that he did not have a 7mm Mag in stock. Oh well, the 25-06 should be fun.

clearanceman 03-27-2003 02:08 PM

RE: I have to get a new rifle

Congrats! 25-06 is a heck of a round for medium sized game. I would tell the Mule foundation about how he treated you though. Perhaps they will use a different dealer next time. He should have given you the full credit they paid on anything in the store at regular (not list) price.

clearanceman, I should have said store prices although they are darn close to list.

I would still complain. They might want to use a more friendly gun dealer next time they have a contest.
