ORIGINAL: Hurricanespg

The '06 will do the job at 1000 yards if you can.
I personally do not think that the 30 aught 6 would be effective at all at 1000 yards but I will have to research some ballistics and get back to you on it. How many fps and foot pounds of energy does it require to penetrate the animal and effectively put it down humanely?

Thanks for all the replies so far, the only reason I question the 30-06 at those distances is because I have never seen anyone at the range with one do it. I mostly see 308's and such, shooting those distances. I would never take a shot at 1000yrds on a animal I was hunting, I would rather let the animal go then take a shot and wound it to let it suffer. My current scope is only good for maybe 200 yrds, its what came on the gun and has worked fine for hunting. Might have to look into a scope and get some match grade rounds to see how far it can shoot. The furthest I have ever shot was 650 yrds but it was not with my personal gun. Nice thing about the range I go to is they offer long distance shooting classes, so they would defiantly help.

Go back and read the original post again. You seem to be under the impression that the intent is to shoot game animals at 1000 yards, when the only intent is target shooting at 1000 yards. At 1000 yards the 30-06 will easily penetrate a target.
