need for a new bbl
So after much shooting lead scrubbing copper removing etc my bbl just forward of the chamber and the last 2 in to the muzzle have oddly shaped Bright spots .At first I thought impacted lead from cast bullets but even the Rem oil 40X is not dirtying patches any more .
Is it pitting in an otherwise mirror like bbl or Impacted lead ? This is a 30-06' 110 LH 22" bbl 1-9 rt . I'm really frustrated at this point , it's 6 weeks till opening day ,my rifle isn't up to it and I don't think that 760 is going to ever be a 300 yrd rifle . options ; new er shaw bbl get rem 760 up and shooting 300 yr groups get my 03 a3 drilled and taped give up all together plan on a brutal stock to get into pistol or muzzle loader range . 300 yards is a very likely range in Reese river Nevada and this lottery system for tags well, it's been 6 years and 4 tries for tags . |
RE: need for a new bbl
Sounds like lead to me, but others may have a different thought. You say you've been shooting cast bullets, so I'd say that is what it is. I would get a solvent that is specifically for removing lead and work with that.
If that doesn't work, is there a gunsmith nearby that can remove it for you? You have 6 weeks so maybe there's time to get it done. Are you saying the gun does not shoot acceptably now? |

Try using Kroil. The oil will get under the fouling and after it sets for a while you will see it flaking off.

RE: need for a new bbl
I live an hour from walmart. 6 smiths about a hundred miles away. Pretty sad that it's cheaper to buy the tools and bbl than take it to a smith.
Kroil is familiar but unknown at the moment. Can you give me a normal source. 6 years ago it was capable of 5 touching when I did the last serious load and bench work for the hunt now my best those loads go in to around 2 inches now. As for owing part of that to me I've shot upwards of 500 rounds in the above rifles and more in 22 and a 357 carbine that I shoot very well its just a gray area not legal gun for big game here. |

Thought it was automotive in nature. Thanks. I'll give it a try.

RE: need for a new bbl
So after using all of the hi tech Casey's Barns etc I found my Hoppes no.9. Brush patch repeat x3 now it's clean some more. The shiney spots at the muzzle are infact pitting. So a 1 inch cut and crown is the next order.
Stay tuned. |
