Thanks for all of your feed back. So the next question is: do I get the plain wood stock for $250; the laminated stock and fore for $300; or the laminated stock and fore with thumbhole grip for $330? One person told me that the laminated stock would hold up better and would remain more accurate in wet situations. Another gun salesman told me that the wood would be fine, but that she did like the thumbhole option and felt it was worth the extra money.

If I were to get another slug gun it would be a 20 ga. With the newer loads available they are more than enough for deer sized game at the distances they are accurate at. Darn near a 45-70 performance level depending one what loads you are shooting.

Not sure I would go with the H&R again, but there is nothing wrong with them.

I have the lam. stock, looks a little better than the plain IMO. Never cared for the thumbhole look but it sure did feel nice on the Omega ml I handled.

I have to disagree on some of these posts. I own both 20 & 12 gauge H&R's. I bought the 20 in 2006 because I wanted the 4.5 inch drop at 200 yards with a 260 gr. bullet. I loved the Federal Barnes @ 1900 fps out of my 20 gage H&R..I took a doe at 218 with my Nikon Range Finder....

There is no doubt...the 20 H&R will hang all day with the 265 gr. bullet andthe flat bullet travel...

HOWEVER....I tucked my 20 gage away when Hornady came out with the 300 gr. SST going 2000fps.(for the 12 gage)....it has the same flight pattern as the 20 gauge with more weight...

Either way...you're carrying a gun that will kill a long ways...know your gun....sight it in with a vise...and understand its tradjectory out to 200yards....always carry a range finder and only take long shots in zero to light light wind....(when shooting 130 +)

Don't get me wrong...265 grains, 300 grains...it all ends with a dead deer with a good shot...the 20 gage is comfty too...a good gun for your young teen or the wife.

I love my H&R's!

If I know that my shots will be over 130, especially 150yrds, I'll take out my smokeless savage if legal or my Omega. The 20ga and 12ga guns stay in the safe.

Personally, I'm a Laminated-Thumbhole kind of guy when it comes to a deer gun. I have a Boyd's thumbhole on my 870 slug gun, a Lam/TH on my sons H&R and a synthetic TH on one of my Knight muzzleloaders. I just like the feel. But....some don't. I'd say, get to to a gun shop and see if you can shoulder a selection. Pick the one that fits you best. As for wood, the laminated stocks will definitely hold up "better". Because they have been sliced and re-glued, they will be more stable and less prone to cracking, warping, etc.

Interesting...I agree the muzz is lethal at this range.. remember the H&R 12 or 20 is a 260 - 300gr. bullet going 1900 - 2000 fps....which is equal to a magnum muzzleloader like a Encore or Omega with 3 pellets of triple 7 or Pirodex (150 grains) still going about 2000 fps with a similar bullet unless you're shootinga200 grainer...

I would say the H&R set-up and magnum muzz is very equal minus the smoke..

I guess its all about comfort and what you're confident in...
