Pick Two
Occasionally we see post asking if you could choose just one rifle for everything what would it be. I’d like to hear what you’d choose if you could pick two rifles to cover everything from varmints to big bears.
I would choose the .243 (55gr - 100gr bullets) for varmints and deer sized game and a .300 WSM (130gr - 180gr bullets) for everything else. The only place I’d feel slightly under gunned is on Brown Bear. What about you? |

RE: Pick Two
You've asked for something that's gonna generate lots of replies, I imagine....
So, with that in mind, and a day or two behind me, I'm gonna have to vote for the 7-08 and the .338 Win Mag. I thought long and hard about the .243 guns for the small side, but I have to stay with the 7-08. JMHO.... |

RE: Pick Two
.25-06 and .338 Winchester Magnum. The .25-06 is good from coyotes to pronghorn antelope to white tailed deer to mule deer to sheep to caribou(a bit overgunned and loud for prairie dogs, perhaps, but it will get 'er done nonetheless). The .338 Winchester Magnum is good from mountain goats to elk to moose to various bear. If you think .25-06 is too light for sheep -- I don't think that is the case -- you can use the .338 Winchester Magnum for sheep also.
