Used Leupold M8 4X can be found for $125 or so at the auction sites. One step up would be a Leupold VariX-II 3-9X; Leupold just discontinued the VariX-II line, and good deals are to be had. Try http://www.swfa.com.

Look into Swift scopes. I have a 4x on my 45-70 and it is probably my favorite scope to datte. I've used Redfield, Weaver, Bushness and Simmons and this Swift is as good as all of them. They have a lifetime waranty I believe and they will not fog up...best yet, my was $90 new.
