I just order my gun two days ago its a H&R ultra Varmit .243 with a 24 inch bull barrel im going to be using it for deer and varmit hunting and trying to find out which scope would work the best for me. Everyone i know just puts a little 3-9x32 on every gun the own and im not wanting that. Im not sure what scopes are good or bad thats y im asking for ya's help

well im not saying i don't want a 3x9 just saying not a 3-9x32 and once before on my savage 223 i had a 3-9x60 bushnell and wish i could find another one anyone know where i could

If you are going to use it on both deer and varmits you'll need more magnafication than a 3x-9x. I would reccomend a 4.5x-14x-42mm or even a 4x-16x-42mm. Leave it turned down for deer hunting and up for varmit hunting. Try www.midwayusa.com or www.swfa.com .

I would suggest a Nikon Monarch in 4-16 X 42 .... but that may be more money than you are looking to spend. Just look around the sites listed and you can get a few ideas....

Take a picture to post if you find a bushness 3x9x60,Myself and many other people would like to this one of a kind scope for ourselves.

I agree that if your going to varmint hunt with it you will want more magnification than 3X9. I would go with something that will give you up to 14-16 power capabilities for varmint hunting. 3x9x40 or 42 is plenty for most deer hunting. If you want a 3x9x40 many times you can get the now discontinued Nikon Monarch UCC scopes NIB on ebay for $200 or even a little less. I have 2 of them and they are very nice scopes that will handle any high powered weapon recoil. I just bought a NIB Monarch UCC "Team Primos" 3x9x40 on ebay for $191.00. To the best of my knowledge they have discontinued the UCC series when they started makingall their new Monarchswith side focus.

Yes, SJ .... you are correct about them being discontinued, and the UCC's were / are very good scopes.... and there are still a few available.... ebay is one source. Not sure who else may still have some left, otherwise, since they have been on closeout for a while.

rod, like you i just ordered a new varmit rifle and am putting a 4x12x40 leupold on mine. you might pay a little more for a leupold but they are worth if. i also got the 243 caliber too. good luck with your new rifle.

The only thing I would choose differently is the Objective lens.
Trying to get better light through the scope at low light times can be crucial, especially if your trying to see the rack a bit better.
4-12 in 40-50mm would be a suggestion.

I personaly hunt with a Leupold vari X III 3-9X and thought it wouldn't be quite as effective on my Texas hunt this past fall, I was wrong...
I was shooting Turkeys at 325 yards, so the 3-9 power worked just fine out of the .270 with 7-8" of drop figured in from a 200 yard zero!:)
I personally wouldn't shoot past 400 or so yards, just haven't practiced enough to be comfortable, but if your going to be shooting varmints past 300 on a regular basis then get a higher power, especially as you get older and your eyes start working against you.

Up until about 15 years ago,I would have agreed with you,but not now.While leupold has been sitting back and increasing their prices while not making scope improvements,the competition has caught up,and now offer more for the same price.All of my hunting rifles used to wear leupolds,now none of them do.

If you're going to spend $400 on a scope, spend $50 more and by a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40mm.
