20ga ultra slug report
overall not happy with the gun. i got the gun as a ultra varmint rifle sb2 in .243. i had sent the guns back to h&r several year ago for a trigger. i got it back with a beautiful 1.5lb trigger pull. i got clover leafs at 100yds with 100gr. winchester power pouin plus ammo. i desided to try out the barrel assesery program. i sent my frame in so they could match up the barrel. i got the gun back and low an behold the trigger is back to 6lbs. i was mad! i called them up and they said that it was out of factory speck and they fixed it. haha, i said you guys did that. they didn't believe me. i sent it back to redo my trigger. they set it at 3.5 and told me that they wouldn't go any lower. i said well yhou did last time, they still didn't believe me.
anyway i shot the 20ga yesterday. not very good. my 870 and sx2 will out shoot the ultra. i shot 2.75 and 3" part gold, plat tips, 3" barnes, lightfields. i expected the lightfields to do the best and they did, but not good enough for me. the rest did just what thay de in every gun i have shot them in and its spray the targer everywhere. 2/75 part gold 50yds ![]() plat tip 50/100yds ![]() barnes 50yds ![]() 3" part gold 50yds ![]() lightfield ![]() lightfield ![]() |

Try more ammo, slug guns can be picky. My 12 ga liked the platinum tips give those a try.

Quite a few people on here and other forums have been swearing by the Hornady SST's and the Lightfields. Try those. Your opinion might change. Good luck.

RE: 20ga ultra slug report
i did shoot the plat tip on lightfields. no hornadys

RE: 20ga ultra slug report
in fact the hornadys in my muzzleloader didn't impress me nor alot of other people with their on game performance. same bullet i the slug so i won't even bother with them.

RE: 20ga ultra slug report
Don't be afraid to try some regular winchester BRI sabots either. And when you try some of these shells try the 2 3/4" and 3 inch loads, often times they shoot different. I have two buddies, one owns an 870 with a factory rifled barrel, the other owns an 11-87 with a hastings barrel. Both their guns shoot great with the 2 3/4 inch BRI loads, but if they use the 3" inch loads the groups more than double.
Like I said, these guns can be very fickle. From what I hear though the 20 gauges tend to be more forgiving. Paul |
RE: 20ga ultra slug report
Well back to basics when something just ain't right.
Is that scope base nice and tight? Is the scope questionable? And that new barrel needs to be cleaned alot, REAL good and REAL frequently. That new barrel has got some sharp rifling. Our H&R 20 can pretty much drive tacks. We shoot the Brenneke 3". For awhile we were shooting Remington Copper Solids with very good results because I got ALOT of them dirt cheap. But we do the Brenneke now and I shoot nothing but Brenneke 3" Gold Mags from my H&R 12. Yep, I clean my barrels alot but for what the guns deliver it's more than worth it. By the way what was the turn around time & cost on that accessory program conversion. I just happen to be setting to doing it myself. |
RE: 20ga ultra slug report
everything is tight. the scope is a burris FF2 2-7x35 ball plex with burris sig rings.
the turn around was a couple weeks. the barrel was like $125 + shipping and fitting fee. |
RE: 20ga ultra slug report
For some reason, they always seem to re-set the trigger when swapping out a barrel. I've not gotten any more barrels, but did have the trigger job done to mine. It is now 3.5 pounds...which is better than the metric ton that it was out of the box.
I had a buddy tell me that you had to specify IN WRITING that you wanted the trigger left alone when getting a new barrel. |
