Ballistics, 308 WIN
I am shooting a Remington 700 308 WIN with a 26in barrel length, and a Remington Premier Accu tip boat tail, 165 grain. I downloaded the ballistics from Remington's site, and they used a 24in test barrel. I want to have turrets made for the scope, do, and if so how, do I refigure the ballistics for the longer barrel? Thanks in advance.

RE: Ballistics, 308 WIN
I believe I understand what you are asking, and the difference in going from the 24 " chart gun and your 26 " gun is to add 10 f.p.s. vel. for every inch your barrel is longer and subtract 10 f.p.s. for every inch under 24 " . So if your barrel is 26 inches, you would add 20 f.p.s. to the vel.

Without using a chronograph, everything is only a guess, including the velocity numbers given by the manufacturer.

I would skip the chrony and the ballistics chart. I wouldgo to arange and shoot out to your max distance. See how the scope turrets actually operate under shooting conditions and documentthe correctadjustment for every 50 yards and tape the results to your stock for quick reference in the field. The turrets don't always adjust as advertised.

Yup, your just guessin if your not shooting at those ranges and seeing how far your actually dropping.

RE: Ballistics, 308 WIN
I stick with Federal rounds with my Savage .308 rifle. For some reason my rifle loves Federal ammo. I remember testing it at a 100yd range with a buddy of mine. We locked my .308 into my buddy's big bench rest. Long story short - it printed a 3 round cloverleaf at 100 yds and the bullet holes touched! We couldn't believe it! So then my buddy suggested bumping up the elevation by 4 clicks, so then it's 1" high at 100 yards. So, that's where I leave it.
