308 Win
Wanted to know opinions on 165 to 168 grain 308 rounds for hunting, for a 26" barrel with a one in twelve twist. Thanks!

RE: 308 Win
I don't "roll my own", so I lean towards the premium carts.
I'm especially pleased and highly recommend the Winchester Supreme's. They make a .308 in 168gr called "Winchester SupremeĀ® Ballistic SilvertipĀ® Rifle Ammunition". Kind of spendy, not for plinkin'. But very good for hunting. I'll get a box of lesser expensive ammo that closely resembles my hunting ammo, and plink with it. (Shoot more . . . shoot more often!!) Then just before hunting season(s), I'll put a couple primos through paper just to make sure where they are shooting. If you think about it, at that rate, a $32.00 box of ammo can last for years! |
RE: 308 Win
Well, I shoot 150 gr. and it does everything I need it to. I really don't see that there would be much , if any, difference in those 2 you asked about.

RE: 308 Win
I think both the Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip 168gr and the Federal Premium Accubond Nosler Partition 165gr would be pretty similiar. Let me double check some velocities though...
Winchester Supreme 168gr Muzzle velocity: 2670 Muzzle energy: 2659 Federal Premium 165gr Muzzle velocity: 2730 Muzzle energy: 2730 My Savage .308 seems to prefer Federal ammo, so that's what I feed it. Federal American Eagle 150gr for plinking and Federal Premium Nosler Partition 165gr for hunting. |
RE: 308 Win
When I reloaded my own I used 165 and 168 grains.they hit the paper similarly.Hollow pts.Gave me a little tighter group.I now use factory loads, winchester 150 grains, and I still get a less than 2" group at 100 yds.I'm still using my 50 year old Winchester Mod. 88.I want a new gun but this one still works fine.

RE: 308 Win
My 308 Cooper likes Hornaby 308 win 168 GR A-MAX the most I havefeed all of federal Premium and Winchester Supreme in it.
My cooper will not group at all with Federal in it. Next to the Hornaby Igo with Winchester Supreme Silvertips . |
RE: 308 Win
Well, I think I am going to go with the Remington Premier Accu Tip BT, 165gr. Anyone have experience with this round? Will be feeding it into a Reminton 700 SPS Varmit with 26 in barrel.

ORIGINAL: sekoutdoors Wanted to know opinions on 165 to 168 grain 308 rounds for hunting, for a 26" barrel with a one in twelve twist. Thanks! Theyshould work great! I used to use 165-grain bullets in my pre-64 M70 Featherweight with a 22" barrel. They were very effective bullets on game(both Sierra HPBT's and Nosler Partitions) and quite accurate as well. Those old M70's had the 1/12" twist also |
