.300 Win mag or 7MM STW
Which do you guy's like better? What would you think is the better round? Would be used for paper and or beanfield rifle.

RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
I shoot a 300 WM plenty. I've taken two shots with an 7mm STW that was enough for me. It has a lot of felt recoil. The gun that I was shooting was a Rem 700.
I'm slightly biased but I would choose the .300WM. Tom |
RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
I have an STW in a Remington stainless sendero and love it. My buddy has a 300win mag in a 700bdl stainless and loves it too. They are very similar in ballistics, not worth arguing over. I'm pushing a 140Barnes to nearly 3500fps, and a 160 gr Accubond to 3300 with no signs of pressure. My buddy is shooting a 165 accubond to 3250 in his 300. I have him beat a little bit on trajectory, but he can use up to a 200 gr bullet in a 300. 7mm only goes up to 175. It's all in what you want. Keep in mind a lengthy barrel is necessary to take advantage of the mags potential. And nowadays, you can't find a new STW. They will either be used, or custom built, nobody I know of chambers them anymore.

RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
I had to make the same decision and ended up going with the .300 win mag.
I went with a savage accu-trigger and it has been a great rifle. |
RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW

RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
apples and oranges aren't they?
I think if you want to compare big boys, it would be the 7mm STW vs. 300 RUM etc... or 7mm rem mag vs. 300 win mag. the .300 win mag is very popular, a classic, For a beanfield/paper/deer, I would just take a 7mm Rem. Mag., anything larger and I start thinking about elk...so if were talking beanfield/deer, no need for even the 7mm Rem Mag let alone 300WM or 7mm STW. Not sure how popular the 7mm STW has become? will it last etc...? if you handload who cares, but in comparing the 7mm STW vs. .300 win mag, seems like 2 different style of cartridges. |
RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
I have both, and my 300winmag with 180gr ballistic tips with 78gr RL22 kicks much harder than my 7mmSTW even with 160gr accubonds with 78gr of RL25. 300RUM blows them both away in terms of recoil

RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
If you handload go with the 7mm STW, go with the 300 Win. Mag. if you don't handload. Good luck.

RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
I have had both and am basicly a 7mm fan.I was just wondering how you guy's felt.I usually go for oddball stuff just for the sake of being different.so I will probally go with the 7 STW looks like I will end up having one built.depending on what kind of donor actions or might loose it and get a dakota andmaybe somewhere around a 28" or 30" tube.Don't know why got a winnie 7 rem. mag. that is probally one of if not my most accurate rifle.Go figure:eek:.

RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
Oh I agree. My favorites right now in my STW are the barnes and the accubonds. I wouldn't be afraid to hunt anything with those in the 140-160 grain range, other than big bears.

RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
Thanks for the input guy's,I was just curious about what you liked.I had a bud who just passed recently. He was the first one around here to build 7 STW's.We had some good times at the range and in his shop.( Especially one time with a 'ol boy, a hot dog, and some Vietnamese hot sauce;)but that is another story).I have always loved the STW since those days kinda want another in his memory. But am seeing alot of .300's in the Sendero type rifles. Not to many 7's.Like I said will probally have to build what I want .Did see a Sako in 7STW on gunbroker ,but don't know how heavy the barrel is.Looked good though.
Ridge ,I didn't know they made 200 grain pills for the 7.Thought 175 was the heaviest.Wouldn't you have to have a different twist between them and the 140's? |
RE: .300 Win mag or 7MM STW
I'd go with the 300 Win. Magnum if it were me. You can't go wrong with a 300 Win. Mag.
