Rifle for dad....

Well my dad never really had much hunting interest, but he loves deer meat!! He and I go fishing together on a regular basis as we are partners on a boat we have on Lake Erie....We almost inseperable at times...lol

This past year i went and bought a new compound bow...right when we were about to leave he asked about a crossbow..He thenbought a crossbow...camo...boots...gloves...mask...ect and wants to try getting one during archery...which is great since now we can go bow hunting together...

I also hunt a big 400acre farm in WV and he always tags along and never had any interest in going out and dropping a deer...now he does all of a sudden. So I told him if he wants to go and hunt this year id buy him a rifle...lol i figure that it can be mine and when we go down there he can use it.

Im thinking of getting either a 243...a 308...or a 7mm08 for him...im kinda torn between the guns to be honest...any thoughts...it will just bee for whitetails...

RE: Rifle for dad....

I just got a flyer in the mail from the Cabela's in Wheeling, WV. They have a Remington Model 7 on sale for $599. I think that is a pretty good price?? It is the full camo version of the rifle. They call it a Model 7 Predator. That would make a great rifle for your dad. Short and light. What else could he ask for. The price really impressed me when on the same page the have a Savage 110 for $529. The Savage is almost as expensive as the Remington with a model 700 action..............

Where are you hunting in WV?? We have some great hunting here. I wish our bucks were as big as your OH bucks.

Take your dad every chance you can. I hunted with my father all our lives. These were some of my best times. I sure do miss him. Tom.

You couldn't go wrong with any one of them.
I have a Model 98 in 243, it's a great rifle. I have a rifle in 308, and it is a superb round. Although I don't own a 7mm/08 I have a 7 x 57, and they are somewhat similar in ballistics and recoilwith the nod going to the 7mm/08, but just a little.

The recoil on all 3 is very do-able, with the lightest being the243, then 7mm/08, and finally the 308.

But that said, the 243 is a puzzycat, the 7mm/08 is a sweetheart, and the 308 is comfortable, as long as the gun fits him well and he holds with good form.

I'd probably say go with the 308 as it will by far have the easiest ammo acquisition and the cheapest too. And it will provide him more than ample deer killing potential as well as many, many other mid to large size game choices. Lighter bullets and a new zero could also make it a decent varmint gun, though not a perfect choice for little stuff.

We hunt Wetzel county in WV. Yes little deer....But usually when i hunt there i usually get atleast 1...Can shoot one every day if you really wanted. We have our own antler restrictions on the land we hunt...minimum 3 on a side...Opening day sounds like the 4th of July on the hills around us...lol

Im leaning for the 308

I'd also suggest you check into the new Marlin XL 7 bolt action. It seems to be getting alot of good press, and is priced right (probably around $300). A .270 in that may be a great thing. Good luck. BTW, I'm a dad, you wanna buy me a new rifle too? Just asking, LOL. Good luck with your purchase.

Cartridge? Any of 'em. If he'll be practicing for any amount of time before deer season, go with a .308. If not, either of the other 2 will be fine & dandy.

Take him to the nearest place with lots of rifles, & have him shoulder plenty 'til he finds one that says, "take me home!". Then, see what calibers they offer it in.

I'll second the Marlin XL7. I haven't bought one.......yet. It's been getting great reviews though.

I like the model seven that Head recommended. I've got one and love it. It should come in any three of those calibers. Kind of a toss up on caliber choice. I'm partial to the .243 myself but any of those will do. If your dad has relatively little experience, you may want to reduce the recoil (such as it is:D) to the lowest possible amount. I talked a newbie buddy of mine into a tikka .243 and he still mentioned the recoil (panzy:D). I let him shoot my 7mm to know what recoil ( and of course it still isn'tTHAT bad) really felt like:D
