NEED HELP, QUICK!!!

hey i have the opportunity to buy a used AR-15 in .308 winchester caliber, will a .308 be a decent caliber for coyotes, or should i just save up the extra coin to get a .243. My 18th birthday is saturday and i figured id buy myself a present. i jsut dont know, the .243 gets down to 55 grain and like 4900fps, while the .308 can only get down to like 150 grain, and at its fastest about 3000fps

a .308 will work alright. it may tear up the hide a bit more but will definately produce a good shooter.

In 30 years of coyote hunting, I don't think I've ever seen a coyote standing still at 600 yards "at least" long enough to set up a shot on one. As well, at that range they present a target small enoughthatsome kind of rest or bipod is almost a requirement.

I've hunted coyoteswith a variety of calibers, but have found that the .223 is theMOST effective inMOST shooting situations.

Ispent a couple days at the range last week shooting E-silhouettes (iron maidens)at 600 yards with a .308. In spite of it's apparent lack ofvelocity and heavier bullets, it EASILY gets out that far, butI don'tintend tobe shooting coyotes that far out - ever.

i think you would be fine out to 600 for shooting coyotes another question.
i know .223s are set for 600 moa. they must be for the military.
You could always buy a .223 and add a 7.62 barrel then you have both.
Funny thing is i bought myself a ar when i turned 18 lol.
there fun to shoot even if you do not yote hunt with it there great for deer.
buy it shoot it just do not expect there to be a pelt left

Its all about what bullet is used. The .243 can/will do just as much damage as the .308, just depends on the bullet.

And theres no way you will get 4900fps with a 55gr...

Over and over I've seen folks here eithersuggest its possibilityor ask about putting a 7.62mm (or .308/.260/.243) AR upper receiver on a5.56mm (.223) AR lower receiver.

Folks, let's think about this....

Will a .308 (.243, .260, etc.) fit into a .223 magazine?

Since the magazine well in a .223 AR lower receiver is EXPRESSLY designed for .223-length magazines, does it matter that the upper might be designed for .308-length cartridges? Try jamming an M14 or L1A1 magazine into the magazine well of your .223 AR-15 and you'll understand.

See where I'm going here? Neither the suggestion or the question pass the common-sense test.

I have yet to see a .308-length upper receiver that's designed for a .223-length lower reciever. The AR-15/M-16/M-4 has been adapted to cartridges such as the 7.62x39, the 6.8mm SPC, and the 9mm (all shorter or similar in length to the 5.56x45mm NATO), but a .308-length cartridge requires a .308-length (AR-10) lower reciever.

sorry to brust your bubble but.

Question / Issue

Will a DPS 7.62x39 upper receiver fit my bushmaster xm15-es2? Will any compensator fit my ar-15?

Answer / Solution

A DPMS 7.62 X 39 upper will fit on the Bushmaster lower receiver. Different caliber AR-15 compensators use different thread sizes. The .223/5.56 compensators are 1/2" X 28 tpi. The 7.62/.308/6.8 SPC compensators are 5/8" X 24 tpi. The 9mm compensators are 1/2" X 36 tpi.
a 7.62x39 upper will fit on a .223 lower. i called bushmaster and asked a year ago as i was going to make the switch.
