Remington 798 vs 700?
Whats so special about the Remington 798? I know its a mauser based action, but is it any more reliable, accurate, solid, or better than the 700? I can see the use of the action on dangerous game animals, but is that what the gun was designed for?
So what gives, is the 798 better, worse, or just different than the 700? What was its intended target market? Thanx for any and all information |

I was looking at the 798, not sure what calibers they chamber it for, just know they had a .375H&H, and .458 win mag I believe, I was looking at the laminated version, I know other 798 versions exist, but ya the main reason I was looking at it was for dangreougs game, controlled feed, reliable, big bore, I'm of the belief that a push feed is more accurate especially in a cheaper rifle, So for anything under .338 I think I'd go with a push feed.
I'm assuming the target market was the guy who want's a 375+, perhaps is going to africa, but isn't a millionaire, and isn't going to be spending $3000 on a custom etc....to hunt in africa 1 time in his life. I think many guys in this "market" just buy a push feed .375 so they can essentially hunt everything in africa, and this just gives them perhaps a better gun for the price, or more bang for the buck, ie a controlled feed action. Probably for the guy who knows a tad about big game etc....since I believe many guys goto africa and haven't much of a clue between a push feed, and controlled feed etc....just buy what they see as a nice looking rifle in .375..... Probably trying to take a bite out of the market, guys who buy CZ's because they have a controlled feed action etc...I'm sure its a deal breaker to some hunters for big game, so just trying to get their pieice of the game, and a good thing if you ask me, seems theres too much junk out there that no one needs, and not enough that we would like to have....such as the new model 70's in .375h&h |

is the 798 as accurate as a 700? if not, is it accurate enough to take shots at moderate distances, ie 200-300 yards?

I haven't shot one, though I suspect any decent rifle should be able to hit 300yds fairly well.
Do me a african/dangerous game rifle though should be able to hit 200yds, though even 300yds isn't asking for a whole lot. It wouldn't be my 500yd antelope choice, but big game to 300yds, I'd expect it to do that, though really why demand that of it? Just wanting a mauser style action? like the look? caliber? what's this for? If you're wanting accuracy get a 700, if dangerous game look to that 798, or others out there...CZ, kimber, etc....Ruger, |

Aren't those the same or made by the same people that used to sell the Mark X mausers???
My brother has a MarkX in 243 Win and it is a great shooter. |

Aren't those the same or made by the same people that used to sell the Mark X mausers??? For the money, A CZ is a much better rifle if you want a Mauser 98 based rifle. |

I would take a mauser 98 action over a 700 action any day. Why do you thing there are so many aftermarket accessories available for the 700. I'm not saying that a 700 isn't a quality firearm but when you can have a design that hasn't needed change in over 100 years you just can't beat that. Just try feeding a round into the chamber at odd angles with a 700 or any push feed action and you'll soon appreciate the control round push feed design of the mauser. This is the ugly green monster trying to take market share from the other mauser based manufacturers. Why do you think they had to make a move like this, they're quality control as of late has been abissmal and they are losing market share.
