Default .45-70 ????

Does anyone on here know what type of action I need to get to have a .45-70 bolt action built? Thanks in advance for the information.

I have heard of a few custom jobs on Mauser actions. I think possibly Chinese, but don' t take that as gospel. Honestly I wonder how reliable it would feed with a rimmed case. Clark Custom Guns was building short action 450 Marlins on a few different actions, but they discontinued. Not enough interest I guess.

You need a Type 42/66 Siamese Mauser. They were orginally chambered in 8 x 52R which uses the same rim size as the .45-70. Feeding will not be a problem. These rifes are pretty sought after anymore and it may cost you a good bit when you find one.

A P-14 enfield might work if the boltface is modified slightly.

Here' s a curveball- have you considered a .458 win magnum? These can be built on a standard Mauser 98 action and can be loaded down to .45-70 performance.

I believe this Gibbs outfit here in Martinsburg WVA is building a .45/70 on the SMLE action....

Thanks for all the info. I hadn' t considered the .450 option. Might be a plan. I actually have no need for the caliber, just looking to build something " neat" that I can use practically in Pa.
