New .308
 

Just bought me a Browning A-bolt stainless hunter in .308. Man it feels so good in my hands, not heavy at all. Got a prostaff 3x9x50 nikon silver coming in the mail. I have been use to shooting .270 all my life. I live in north carolina and hunt whitetail deer around 130 to 200 lbs. furthest shot would probly be around 300 yrds but rare. My question is what is a good bullet for this caliber, to take down deer?

I would suggest to start with the same bullet that you shot from your 270. If you liked BT's, Partition, Accubond, or regular Pointed Soft points, loaded by Winchester, Remington, Federal or whoever. I would stick with what you have confidence in. If you get exceptable accuracy, you're all set and ready to go. If not, there are dozens of others to try. Any common bullet weight from 150 - 180 gr.will flatten deer out to 300 yds and beyond.

I love my A-bolts, I'm sure it will prove to be a fine rifle for you.

The 150 gr. bullet wt. will do everything you need it to do. That is one swwet rifle, and I know you'll love it. I would look into the Accubond or Scirocco bullet loadings or something like the nosler partition. All those have worked wonders for me. If you are looking for a little extra oomph, look into the Hornday light mag SST loadings for the .308. I have swapped completly to the Hornady light mag in all my rifles. I have found them to be both accurate and very deadly.

Some folks say that they don't live up to their advertised extra velosity and energy, but that could not be farther from the truth in my experiences. I started using them 2 years ago, and they perform as Hornady says. And they don't really cost any more than other premium ammo , and are actually less than some of the regular bigname brand stuff.I havebought 14 Boxes of light mag ammo since last season. Thats how impressed I have been with it.

Since you asked about a bullet, I am assuming you reload. IMO the best weight bullet for a short action 30 caliber is a 165 grain bullet. You can buy the expensive bullets if you want, but in my opinion they are not worth the money they cost. The Sierra Game King bullet is a great choice. I also like the Nosler Ballistic tip bullets, they shoot great in my 30-06.


If you do not relaod-no problem. I would not waste my money on premium ammo unless you could not get the regular ammunition to shoot(accurately). Remington Core-Loc ammo is more than enough for deer hunting. Winchester Silver Tip's are just as good. Instead of buying expensive premium ammo-buy more less expensive ammo and practice.

Great rifle choice, and great cartridge choice. Try to find someLake City surplus ammo. That ammo shoots great, and should be cheaper to buy for practice. Tom.

The other rifle that is the .308 I shoot is the new Remington VTR triangle barreled rifle that I shoot Black Hills match grade in. They aren't good game bullets. Also I don't reload so all your replies help.
