300 ultra mag shooters
just curious what everone shoots out of their 300 ultra mags I picked up some 180 grain swift scirrocos I' ll be using it for whitetails and elk did I make the right choice? Also I do not reload and is Remington the only ones that make shells for this?

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
Before I started reloading, I shot the 180gn scirrocos out of my sendero sf. Great accuracy. As I' ve posted before on this forum, my rifle hates the 150gn scirrocos. I' ve seen Federal 300rum loades before but the price tag was around $55!!!! No way. As for whitetails, you won' t have any problems. I' ve never shot an elk with mine.

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
I tried 165 and 180gr scirrocos in both of my 300ultramags and they produced the worst accuracy of any bullet I have used in either gun.I will be trying the hornady interbond next in the hope that it will provide great accuracy.I am using 180gr ballistic tips now and have taken four elk and two moose with them without a problem but a bonded bullet would provide more insurance on the larger animals.

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
I am considering getting 300UM IN A SAVAGE WITH THE MUZZLE BRAKE I HAVE A 300WIN MAG HOW IS THE RECOIL COMPAIRED TO THE WINMAG AND DO YOU THINK THE MUZZLE BREAK WOULD HELP?

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
mike--if you can handle the 300 win mag you should be able to handle the 300 ultra
|
RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
The ultramag does pack noticeably more recoil than the 300win mag.If you go with a muzzle brake you will have to wear ear plugs while hunting as a single shot with a muzzlebrake will make your ears ring.An alternative is to practise with the muzzlebrake then sight the gun in without the muzzlebrake and hunt without it as they often affect the point of impact.

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
I would go with a Remington 200 gr. Nosler Partition, or Remington 180 gr. Nosler Partition. Good luck .

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
I have an old post somewhere about the Scirrocco' s. I harvested a buck last fall with one and the performance out of my 7mm RM was less than perfect. I stepped up to a N. Partition for my Elk and that performed better.

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
About everyone I talked to has had horrible luck out of the Scirrocos. Including myself. I do know 2 people out of maybe 10 that got them shooting. Very finicky on bullet seating depth. What a waste of $35 dollars for factory shells. Then a waste for 3/4 pound of H1000. Then a waste for bullets. Then a huger waste of tons of time trying to get them to shoot.
What I have seen is the 200gr bullets seem to shoot the best out of these 300RUM' s, and I have had two. Stick with the Nosler Partitions. |
RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
I use 180 gr nosler Ballistic tips. The 180 gr Scirroccos did not shoot well in my gun
|
RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
thanks for the help I' ll see if I can trade the scirrocos in for some noslers

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
I use the Hornady 180gr SSTs in my Sendero and they seem to do real well. I just have a question, If you have a 300WM why get a 300RUM. I got the 300RUM for a paper puncher more than a hunting rifle. I did use it on one hunt this year just to try it out. Bigcountry which powder did you get the best overall reesults with. The Retumbo gives me good groups but I am getting more fliers than I want.

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
I know most says RL25 is the greatest. But I love H1000. Not too many people mention it. All I hear is RL25, RL22, and AA. But I didn' t have great luck out of either of the Reloader powders.
180gr Nosler Partition and 94.5gr of H1000, with a CCI primer and COL:3.62" Also had excellent luck with 90gr of H1000 and 200gr A-Frames. Too Expensive. don' t tell me that about Retumbo. Just loaded up 3 different bullets with Retumbo. 180gr SST, 180gr Nosler and 180gr Grand Slams. Will tell ya how it works. |
RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
just curious did anybody put a different recoil pad on their 300 ultra I' m considering trying either a pacymer decelator pad or the new one from limb-savers any recommendiations?
|
RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
Bear, a few shooters I know went with the Pachmayr pad and were happy with it. I myself am going to dump the tupperware stock and install the barrel and action into a McMillan Hunter stock. I' m kinda partial to the Vias Muzzle brake also. Set up this way you can enjoy an afternoon of shooting.[8D]

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
Bear72-My own rifles have mcmillan stocks and decellerator pads and it does make them much more pleasant to shoot.I will not have a muzzlebrake due to the noise and muzzleblast but with a good stock and decellerator I don' t find recoil a problem. It is stiff but it is very tolerable.

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
Man, I held one of those Win. Model 70' s today in 300 WSM and boy that is a nice feeling gun. Felt a ton better than the Rem 700 (both stainless/syn). I' ve always been a die-hard Rem person but their centerfire rifles always leave me wanting more (usually the syn. stocked ones).
I would dearly love that Win. in either WSM or RUM w/ a detach. mag. That would be a perfect rifle for my needs. |
RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
I have a 300 Ultra Mag and in my opinion it is a great Elk rifle, but way too much for whitetail. There are better calibers if you need one rifle fo both animals.

RE: 300 ultra mag shooters
rooter. Be careful there are folks on this board who will raise hell with you for even attempting to hint that you can have too much rifle for those vicous whitetails. When I did shoot Magnums I used only 180 grain Hornady spire point. For target shooting I used 190 grain Hornady BTHP. They worked very well for hunting as well although I don' t thin Hornady reccomended them for Hunting I use Barnes X bullets a lot but the Hornady' s have worked well through a large range of calibers.
