It's not necessarily the weight of the bullet that is important, it is also it's construction and the velocity it has when it hits the animal...

Do a search, this has been discussed a "few" times on here...

With factory loadings, I've killed them with 85-100gr bullets, funny thing, the 85gr bullet actually penetrates more than some 100gr bullets...

I've had excellent results with the sierra 85 gr bthp gameking over the years of people shooting it in a remington model 788 in 6mm.

I have had good luck with the Sierra 85gr. HPBT on deer. I recently handloaded the Hornady 95gr. SST and want to give them a try this season. From what I hear, they should perform well.

I played with a TON of 243 bullets over the years, and I settled on the 95gr Combined Technology BT. I've only had one deer out of probably a good 50+ that has taken a step with that lil pill.

2feathers - I did some experimenting with the 95gr SST and wasn't impressed with it at all. Never had an exit, and it retained no weight what-so-ever. It acted alot like a varmint BT. Out of the half dozen deer or so me and my buddies took with that load, all requireda follow up shot or 2 to put 'em down.

X2 Also had good results using the Hornady 100 grain SPBT

I prefer the 95 or 100-grain Nosler partition in .243/6mm caliber for deer, especially for BIG ones! However, I have observed that the 85-grain Sierra HPBT often does a surprisingly good job killing deer, despite being labelled as a varmint bullet!

Thanks everyone. My reason for asking is that I've been considering changing over to a 243 from my 270 and 280 due to recoil. Or either get one of the new recoil reducing pads put on the guns.I'm a bit older now, 65, and a little bit of shoulder trouble, so I don't take the punch as well as I used to. Thanks again.
