Thats the thing about a 45-70. You can buy factory remington stuff that shoots little ahrder than a 30-30, or you can crank up handloads to beat you like a 338winmag. You can go lengthways thru a deer with a 20Kpsi 1600fps 405gr load.
Yes if you have a hot load it will thump you pretty good, but if you are shooting at game you don't notice it. Also it doesn't seem to tear the meat up as bad as some of the higher velocity rounds do.

Just something to concider. The guide gun is great, mines is a 35rem verson about six lbs,I load the 200gr CoreLokt to 2190fps but 2220 fps is very realistic and you can get Buffalo Bores speer 220gr AMMO loaded to 2200fps. That at 125 yards is whatthe 358win with that same bullet does at 200 yards. On the Alaskan Form some guys use this for Alaskan Moose and inside of 100 yards its works great for them. The 45-70 is great but don't under estimate the 336 in 35rem fordeer/hogs to out 200 yards and elk/moose out to 100 yards it works great.

If you really want to thump them take oldelkhunter's advice. A 'little' Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 will definately put them in their place and is nice to carry. Best to try and find an older one that is ported. I love mine and I don't think I will ever get rid of it.
Do you guys scope the 1895G's? There are a couple of places where I timber hunt elk, nothing over 100yds and this sounds like a fun way to hunt them.

All I can tell you is what my outfitters all tell me, "anything bigger than 243" You can kill them with anything on perfect shot placement but does anyone always make perfect shot placement. Sent some hunters to North TX this last spring and they left with a lot of hogs running around with limps from badly placed shotsfrom 243's

I scoped mine. I have a fixed 4X on it. My 1895G also has the ported barrel. I'm shooting 350gr Hornady round nose handloads (around 2,000FPS).

I have a .450 Marlin with the ported barrel and it helps with the recoil but it is really loud.

S.J.A. it's not the 243 cal. it's the shooter. You are correct about the shoot placement, but I have killed as many with my .22 mag. pistolas with any other gun I shoot including a .243. Part of the blame might be on the outfitter for not setting up some shooting rules. The .243 will kill any hog with even amisplaced shot. Just my two cents!

I like the older cartridges like the 45/70 if most of your hunting is 150 and less. 30-06 if longer shots are common.
