I am looking to buy one. Any recommendations? I like the taurus.

RE: 1911 handgun
MB77,
I would take a Taurus if it were free and I didn't have to depend on it for personal/home defense. I've not only heard too much bad rhetoric about them, I've also seen/experienced some poor reliability problems in their weapons. I think the 1911 is a great firearm but I would go with a different manufacturer. Best luck and God bless. |
RE: 1911 handgun
Taurus: I would buy if they were still in the mid $450.00 range but there prices are going high as high as a springer mil-spec
I have a SA 1911 Mil-Spec that I total reworked myself the gun I purcased last just for $599.00 is was a flip because he the dealer had a excellent taurus also is stock and it was the best one I seen so far but he was asking $625.00 I myslf could not see paying more for the taurus then the springer.I have about 4000 rounds threw the SA with not a problem;I think all my upgrades i will add another $100.00. The gun is a range gun only the trigger breaks at 36 oz. I think I made the right choice http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a380/lonewolf5347/new1911andduckpictures004.jpg |
RE: 1911 handgun
I have a Colt but Kimber is producing some nice models.

RE: 1911 handgun
mb77 - don't rely on J's post. He may have been relating to the earlier Taurus.
The newer manufactures are well made. My PT1911 will shoot along side any Kimber, Colt, Les Baer, etc. This pistol is accurate and I have yet to have it malfunction in any way shape or form. The only thing this pistol could be improved on is the finish. |
RE: 1911 handgun
Taurus makes an awesome 1911. Its well made and its SOLID unlike some of the others. You know you have something in your hand when you pick it up. The shock from shooting it is virtually not there. I can shoot one all day in many calibers and continue to shoot. Taurus gots it goin on!!!

RE: 1911 handgun
I have a Taurus and I love it. It shoots very well and so far it has been very dependable. I also have a 24/7 that I carry and it also has been very dependable. My father-in-law is on a Kimber kick and has gotten a 1911 and a compact .45 to carry and he love both of them. I have heard people here talk bad about the Taurus but I have yet to have any bad experiences with mine. good luck

RE: 1911 handgun
I've got a pair of Para-Ordnance P14's. It's nice to have 17 rounds of .45 ACP available, just in case...;)

RE: 1911 handgun
I just spent 3 days at the NRA convention and ended up ordering the Taurus, comes with everything I want and has an excellent warranty, Ive had kimbers and such and think the taurus is up to the job. people will be gun snobs but a 1911 shouldnt cost $1000 to get the options on the kimber, Iam getting the blue model, will break it in and will carry it.

RE: 1911 handgun
Interesting. Folks express opinions in favor of something other than a Taurus, and that makes them "gun snobs"? The man asked for opinions on 1911's, not just about the Taurus... My preference, as a competitive shooter, is for a hi-cap, and I've had very good performance from both of my P14's. They've each had thousands and thousands of rounds through them and have proven extremely reliable. The only complaint that I've had is that the original mag releases were made of synthetic.

RE: 1911 handgun
I bought two Taurus this year.. Both had to go back for repair the first time I shot them.. I will not buy another one..

RE: 1911 handgun
I have a springfield armory 1911 and love it. Springfield has a lifetime warranty and it is a well made gun. I dont have any knowledge of the Taurus, but I did buy a cheap Charles Daly 1911 brand new and the jun always jammed. Ended up trading it in on the Springfield.

RE: 1911 handgun
ipsc - I really don't think dale directed his comment to you. But he has a point. How can a company like Taurus throw in all those neat little goodies that companies like Kimber and charge about 1/2 the price? I think what he meant is that some people think if you did't pay $1000 plus for a 1911 then you bought a piece of junk. And that just isn't so with the Taurus PT1911. True, there are a few that may not be just right, but that can be said for anything.
And for most of us, if we need more than 17 rounds of 45ACP, we could be in some serious trouble. Two 8 round mags should be more than enough provided tactical mag changes are used. But for you shooting competition, you can shave off a lot of time by cutting down on reloads. |
RE: 1911 handgun
Been very happy with my Springfield loaded. It is not top of the line, but I had a good gunsmith help me work over everything and have never had a hiccup.A large part of thecost difference is with tolerances and hand fitting of the individual parts. It is noticable and the more a 1911 is "tuned" the more reliable it is. If I were going to buy a gun that had to be shot "bone stock" for personal protection an inexpensive 1911 is not what I would get. Just my 2 cents.

RE: 1911 handgun
No, not dircted at anyone, just saying that a good 1911 should not cost over $1000. I have kimbers and springfields and love them but Iam not carrying a $1200 pistol all the time or leaving it in my truck. I like the Taurus and think they are great guns. All brands can have a bad apple, Colt is making a lot of junk these days also:D

RE: 1911 handgun
If it worth buying such a model, it's worth buying one that's VERY good. I've read quite a few folks having issues with the Kimbers and taurus...well they don't exactly have a steallar reputation right now either. Springfield seems to be the bread & butter line but were it me, I'd go Les Baer. Guess 'm a gun snob.
