Mossberg 535
 

I just bought a mossberg 535 12 ga. The barrel is smooth and unchoked. it came with a turkey choke. the guy at The MOUNTAIN store said that i could buy a improved choke so i could shot slugs. He also stated that i could by a slug choke. anyone heard of the that type of choke, would i be better just buying a rifled barrel or just adding the improved choke and saving some $$$? does it really matter? oh and if you own one of this guns what do you think about it, any problems.

I'd get the rifled barrel. I'm confused on if you have a smooth barrel, why it came with a choke? Is it truly smooth or is there a place to screw a choke in?

Buy yourself the rifled/cantilever barrel, but make sure to use either 3" or 3.5" shells when using slugs.

Firing a 2-3/4" slug in a 3-1/2" chamber is not recommended because of the length of the jump the slug makes between the end of a 2-3/4" case and the front end of a 3-1/2" chamber. This can cause misalignment of the sabot on the slug, thus causing a serious pressure problem as well as poor accuracy. Slugs are NOT LIKE SHOT SHELLS where a shorter shell can be safely fired in a longer chamber with no ill effects. The bottom line is you should use a shell with a minimum case length of 3" (ideally 3-1/2") in any 3-1/2" chambered rifled barrel for best accuracy. THE CASE LENGTH SHOULD MATCH THE CHAMBER LENGTH WHEN IT COMES TO SLUGS.

Just get a rifle barrel that will shoot 3 inch shells. I don't even know if mossberg makes a 3.5 inch slug barrel, and if they do you are going to have trouble finding slugs for it. And if you do find them, I wouldn't want to pull the trigger on it;). The barrel obviously has screw in chokes, mossberg doesn't make a pump gun without screw in chokes. NEVER shoot that gun without a choke installed. I'm really surprised it didn't come with three chokes? The 500's come with an IC, Modified and full choke, I figured the 535's would come with more than one as well.

Lightfield makes 3.5" slugs, they are equal to a 3" slug as far as the load, just the shell's case is longer. As far as the barrel is concerned, it is the chamber that can either handle 3.5" shells or not, if the barrel is made for the 535 that you can use 3.5" shells

I'm pretty sure a standard 3 inch mag rifled barrel will fit a 535. Same principal as using a standard slug barrel on a magnum 870 turkey gun.

Paul, the barrel has nothing to do with it. The chamber size is what counts. If the chamber can fit up to a 3.5" shell then you can use shells from 2.75" up to the 3.5". If your using a model 500 then you need a barrel for a model 500, same goes with a 835, 535, 935, etc. you would need the barrel that was made for the model.
