Why are you in a rush to get a .300 mag? or just a mag for that reason?
No rush really just thought if i was gonna get a 30cal then i may as well get the most out of it.

If you plan to hunt big game, ie bigger than deer, such as elk, moose, a .300 mag is nice to have.

If in no rush though, I'd wait until down the road when you are bigger and have more of a sense of what you plan to hunt....or once you draw a nice elk tag somewhere etc...book a hunt then decide.

Also depending what you already have....may determine which .300 mag you decide to get.

I had a .270, at the time that was my biggest rifle.....the next rifle I bought was a .300 win mag, at the time there was no .300 WSM, or .300 RUM, only the .300 wby and .300 win mag really. I'm partially glad there were only 2 at the time, nowadays it may be a pretty tough decision. Also if your .300 is going to be only your elk and bigger gun, vs. say youre mule deer and elk combo rifle.....can factor in the decision.

So if you are in no rush, might as well wait, because then recoil really won't be an issue, and you can decide on which round is actually best for you without worrying about recoil.

Don't wait . The only thing I wished I did when I was younger is buy more guns. If you have the money now, buy now. Buy what you want. Spend the money on quality not quantity. I was never a big fan of thirtys until I started to really understand the ballistics and bullet selections. Now I own more than one. Magnums are definately overkill for game in the US but they are cool to have.

BTW I would have to vote for the 300Wby in a Mark V followed closley by the 300Win in a Remington Sendaro. The 300RUM is great but has a LOT of recoil. If you go that route you WILL NEED a break. Of course many will say to shoot reduced loads but if the gun has the capabilitys, Why? Break it! 300 RUM with a Rem action and any good 30" custom barrel works great.

Last year I had to make a similar decision as I bought a new rifle for my first trip out West (Colorado). I had a .30-06 but wanted something that could really reach out if necessary. After listening to many on this site, reading articles, talking with gunsmiths, and so on, I realized there was no right answer, just a bunch of opinions.

I decided on the .300WSM and I'm very pleased with its performance. I still enjoy the .30.06, but I seldom use it anymore. The .300 WSM recoil is very tolerable and the caliber far out performs the 06. I use Federal Premium Ammunition - they load their .300 WSM ammo to achieve slightly better ballistics than the .300 Win Mag.
