One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
Ok another one of those questions, I mostly hunt deer, I will hunt elk about once every 2-3 years, bear mostly with archery equipment, want to do a bou hunt and a rocky goat hunt at some point but 7 out of 10 hunts will be deer. I love my 270 and my 300wsm winchester, but Iam going to have an hs precision rifle built. If I go with a 270wsm I will shoot a 140gr accubond for elk and a 130 TSX for deer and goat.. a 300wsm I will shoot a 180gr TSX.
What caliber would you go with?? I really want to get my hunting down to one caliber, I have a 7mmo8 and a 260, 270, 243, 243 wssm, but I want one precision rifle built for those trips of a lifetime. Reasonable shots at broadside animals at 400 yards or less do you think the 270wsm would be ok for an all around rifle?? I really like the caliber and handle the 270 well and with the added speed and better ammunition feel that it wil do as well as a 300. What do you think |

7wsm...

270 or 300 wsm's only:)

RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
Didn't Jack O'Connor kill 19 elk and a couple of moose with a plain jain .270??? Most of the elk were killed with the Winchester Western 130gr bullets as well...
I don't believe they have gotten tougher, either will do the job, especially since we have more premium bullets than we have ever had... If it were me, I'd go .300 Mag...:D |
RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
300wsm. You can bullet down for deer and bullet up for elk, bear, etc. More options than the 270.

If I had to have one I would go with the 300 WSM

RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
I think either way, I had to laugh at 7wsm.......that's dead right? yea skip that one.
when I think elk, I think 300+ mag...... deer I think .270.....you mostly do deer you say..... I believe the .300wsm is way more popular, though the .270wsm is coming on pretty strong.....I think both are here to stay, but without a doubt I think the .300wsm is, the .270 is probably too, the .325wsm I'm not sure about? I think for elk I'd really want a 180gr bullet over a 150gr, and for deer you can still use the 180's or use 150's. And with new cartridges always coming out and failing etc.....and the .270 not a sure thing just yet, get a .300WSM. You already have a 270 on down....and doubled up on some rounds...243win, 243wssm etc....get a .300wsm spread em out a bit. Don't do it again with a .270win and a .270wsm....too close in my book. |
RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
Everything you'll be hunting, even Elk, is well within the capability of the 270WSM. Which is what I would choose, since by your own admission, its primarily going to be a deer rifle. Flat shooting, hard hitting...tough not to like it.

RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
.300 WSM will kill them more than dead.:D
|
RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
I think that since you are the most comfortable with the .270 wsm you probably shoot it more accurately and would be more comfortable with it if you had to take a quick shot, and since you mostly hunt deer and don't expect to be shooting anything over 400 yards, which is a long shot on game anyway, the .270 is the gun for you to key on. More comfortable to shoot and you like it. Best answer.

RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
Deer and elk have become so tough to kill over the last few years I have had to switch my aresenal around a bit as well.I now only use a .30-378 Weatherby for deer and my trusty .338 Lapua Mag for elk.;) I have recently heard that deer and elk are building immunity to these rounds as well!;)
Seriously though, either will do the trick but the 300 WSM might be a little better suited for the larger stuff. Having said that IMO a 7mm Remington Mag or the 300 Win Mag would be better choices than the WSM rounds. |

thanks for the advice, lots to think about

RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
trust me i own a 270 wsm and i wish i would have got the 300 wsm, ammo for the 270 is sparse in my town and the price is over the top. realy the 7mm mag should have been my ideal, dont know why i didnt get one, even a 300 win mag is getting easier to buy these days, really i jave found no advantages to my wsm rifle, its meant to be shorter and lighter but having a thick bolt and chamber doesnt help at all. its a ok bullet and i think it will last but i think it will suffer the same fate as the 6.5 remington mag, which is the better bullet

RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
I would use what you have, the .243 for deer and yur .270 for elk. Take the money you save from buying another rifle and go on a hunt with it.

.300wsm can do anything the .270wsm can - not the other way around.

RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
ok after handling just about every rifle at the NRA convention in Louisville I have decided on the Nosler 48 rifle in 270wsm. I can find ammo pretty easy, the rifle will shoot the 140accubond 1"MOA or better and I can use that round for deer, goats, black bear, elk and prob moose with the right shot placement. I like the 270 wsm becaue I can drop to the 270cal 100 grain TSX or 130 gr TSX for antelope or deer and go up to the 150 gr partition for anything big if needed.
I like the WSM round and think they will be around a while:-) |

RE: One rifle 270wsm vs 300wsm???
I like the feel of the stock on the Nosler, 6.5lb, super smooth action, pointed and felt well, I really liked the HS as well but the stock cost extra for camo, it doesnt feel as good and Mr. Nosler talked at length with me about his rifle and the people at the HS booth acted like I was bothering them. I will buy a 270wsm in the new stainless winchester model 70 when it comes out as my back up, super rifle with bell and carson stock, fluted barrel, very nice.
Does cooper make a synthetic?? |
