I am not sure carefully you read the posts. Ridge is the one theat started whining that I am following him around the net not me. And I am done torturing this post with this back and forth nonsense.

J for the USA. For the most part you are in the wrong place if you are wanting good input on long range hunting on game bigger than deer. The majority of folks here are guessing how they would extend their own long range shooting (targets) let alone effective long range big game (as in elk) harvesting....

I heard:
** Much whining about ammo prices (who said long range hunting is gonna be cheap, if your allowance isn't big enough then don't undertake it)
** Much talk about the ability to punch paper without addressing dimished killing power at distance(I thought this was a long range hunting discussion)
** Much hoopla about crazy practice counts

I heard:
** Little talk about increasing cartridge strength to match the increase in size and toughness of the game above bambi popping
** Little talk about increasing cartridge strength to allow for killing power loss at 500 yards compared to say 100 to 200 yards

I heard:
** Only one instance of external MOA adjusting turrets (standard fare for any truly serious long range shooter/hunter)
** Only one instance suggesting searching for input on the question from sources and websites that actually walk the walk besides just talk the talk

I didn't hear:
** Anyone discuss practicing at 600 to 700 yards so as to be quite effective at 500 yards.
** Anyone discuss the cross-transferability of practicing more reps with say a 308 and fewer reps with a more robust unit.
** Anyone discuss level compensating range finders
** Anyone discuss Nightforce external adjusting MOA turret scopes.
** Anyone discuss PDA computed MOA adjustments for both elevation and windage and humidity andaltitude as well as the usual ballistic info
** Anyone discuss the concept of wind meters or the need for sniper-type field approximation of cross winds
** Anyone mentioned the use of military style tag teams with one spotting and observing and computing MOA adjustmentsfor the external turrets and the other operating the rifle.
** Anyone mention the idea of attending long range training schools that are offered around the country for expert instruction

The only voice I heard that even came close so as to get majority credit would beRidge Runner.

Personally, I've never had a problem withBu!!sh!t being called BS any time I've seen it. It is what it is.

J for the USA, I'd pretty much switch venues for your "knowledge gathering" if you really want to come away with thereal skivvy on this topic. Too much radar blocking chaff being dropped here.
Good Luck.

I'm amazed at how I threw out a snowflake and it has tumbled out of control into an avalanche. I do appreciate EVERYONE's input and I think EVERYONE here knows at least something. It sounds like most know more than me. I don't feel like a smaller man by admitting that and the big plus is that it keeps me out of the pissing contest! :D

This has tumbled out of control not only in the realm of personal attacks but also the scope of my inquary. I suppose I could have been more specific up front, but I'm only looking to take 300-400 yard shots. As I said earlier I think I should stay with the -06 for a while but I should consider upgrading my riflescope.

I would bet money that I'm far from the oldest/most experienced person here, but having worked in the business world for several years has taught me a lot about courtesy and giving the benefit of the doubt. So I actually have one piece of adage to share with everyone reading: "Arguing with people on the internet is like going to the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded." ;)

I'm still open to suggestions on a scope to replace my Leupold VX-I. Thanks again to all who have weighed in.

If you are sticking with your 30/06 then ignore this...
But if you're still chewing on your choice for another rifle in the big game realm to hunt at ranges in the 300-400 yrd range ... then my suggestion would be either a 300 Win mg or a 338 Win Mag sighted in at 325 yards to be dead on. Then practice your shooting at 100, 200, 300, and 400 to intimately learn your drop at the various ranges with the loads you are condisreing. Close up (75-100 yrds)you'llneed to hold low on the shoulder and beyond 350 yrds you'llneed to hold high on the shoulder but only much shooting will teach how much is enough.
beyond 200 yards is a long shot for most, let alone 400 .. !!???
Good luck, and please practice at all ranges, with and without wind ...

Ridge, What is the approximate cost of the Mark IV Leupy?

J, Is that something you would consider?

RE: Second Gun - big game hunting

It looks like they're about $1,000--yikes! I'm not sure I really need something that hi-tec. I'm not dissing quality optics and I know it wouldn't be a 'waste' of money. I guess all I really need at this point is a scope that has a recticle with some sort of bullet drop compensator. Perhaps a step higher quality glass, maybe a larger objective lens(?) I don't think I can justify more than $500.

If you want a true MOA scope, I have one for sale in the classified section that would fit the bill perfect. Leupold Mark 4 Tactical 3.5-10x40 LR/T M3 Reticle, Matt Finish. ;)

J for USA,

"....I don't think I can justify more than $500...."
Ah, do you already have your rangefinder?
If not, then is there something in the budget for that?

RE: Second Gun - big game hunting

Cabelas lists the Leupold VX-III 3.5X10 X40 for $479.95. I have used these scopes forever and they have never let me down on any shot- even beyond 400 yards. They do not have the bells and whistles, but they perform flawlessly.

Develop good shooting skills and then someday if you want to get into real long range shooting you can explore that as well- totally different kettle of fish than what you seem to be wanting to do.

When you collect a few more dollars, you might consider looking for a good range finder. These can be purchased for under $400.00 that do a good job.
