Why not just flip a coin? Just kidding, I'm not even sure a 280 Rem will kill elk at 400 +? But what ever worth a try haha! I'm in the proses of getting a new rifle my self andwas looking at those same calibers, not the 280 Rem but the 325 WSM, 300 WSM , 300 Win Mag and the 7mm Rem Mag. What rifle do you plan on getting it in? I'm getting mine in either Tikka Stainless/Synthetic, Browning A-bolt-Micro Hunter, Composite Stalker or the Stainless hunter and the new Browning X-bolt Composite stalker or Browing X-bolt hunter.

Good luck!

Why would anyone need to shoot a deer or elk beyond 200 yrds, kinda like relying on the weapon and not the skill of hunting? The fun and challenging part of hunting is getting close enough without being detected. In any case, I would add the 270WSM to the list, seems to have the edge over the 7mm and 280 rem.

of those I'd only consider the .300 wsm, .300 win mag, or 7mm rem mag.

Ever consider the .270 WSM?

Seems like alot of long range.....and an elk or moose at 400yds.....is big animal far away!

Maybe a .300 wby? or .300 RUM?

7mm STW?

Just to make sure we are on the same page here with what we are comparing:

1.325 WSM - APPLES
2.300 WSM - ORANGES
3.7MM Rem Mag - PEACHES
4.300 Win Mag - GRAPEFRUIT
5.280 Rem -NECTARINES

Whitetails at 600 yards???? I can't answer that because there is no where short of interstate 64 or the Atlantic Ocean around my part of the world you can even SEE 600 yards. I suppose I'd go with the 300 WM, take that for what it is.

Elk moose and mulies out to 400.... either the 300WM or 7RM. I like the 300 WSM right much myself, but I don't stretch her legs at all. I don't shoot past 250-300.... just never needed to or had the ability to. So it rolls in the east.

The 280rem is very close to the 3006, though a touch flatter due to .284 (7mm) bullet it chucks. It will kill an elk or moose at 400 yards & deer at 600! 7mm rem mag is a step up ballistically from the 280 rem (same .284 bullets) especially for 160gr+. It too will killat 400 & 600. Thebetter choice for long range of the 2 .284's listed. 300wsm ditto and ditto! 300 WM ditto and ditto. I feel the WM is better choice as it will allow you to use the longer and heavier bullets without robbing performance in terms of the 2 300's listed. 325wsm would also work, however it also is more limiting in bullet selection and IMO this limits the shooter to much for longer range where eeking out as you can is extremely import
So basically all are capable on paper however the question lies are you up to the task??May I ask what are using now, ranges & experience?

Personally ofyour list I'dwiddle it to the 7mm rem mag or 300wm.

My last 2pennies worth for now- if your serious about long range shooting thenlook into the STW, RUMs or wildcatdesign for such a task. I'd seriously think about building your next rifle vs buying off the rack as well.

It has taken me over 20 years to feel confident that I can make the shot at the distances you have listed. That is a long way in a hunting situation. There is a lot of difference between fair weather bench shooting and real weather hunting. For shooting the distances you arespeaking of it takes a lot of preparation. But it is by no means impossible. You definitely need to buy quality products to be able to do this consistently(and humanely).

My cartridge choice(not caliber) is the 300 WSM for my long distance deer rifle. I would also consider the 300 Win Mag as adequate. I do not consider any "caliber" below 30 caliber to be acceptable. But the 7 mm caliber is used by many. Tom.
