I need a quiet 22 round.
 

OK I am having a squirrel problem. They first stashed all their acorns in that A/C of my wifes Honda that was funny, but now they have some how come through my subfloor and are storing their acorns in my pantry.

I live in a rural neighborhood but I do have neighbors in sight and earshot. I need a quiet round for my 10/22 so I don't annoy theneighbors. I could get a pellet rifle but I would never use in again.

in cabellas there is a conversion kit to make your 10/22 a 22 short

Give the CCI 22 CB long a try. At 710fps they are subsonic and are much quieter than the standard velocity rounds. They also come in shorts but for the 10/22 rotary magazine they work better. You will have to cycle the action by hand as they are only powered by the priming material. I use them for the same purpose as you are wanting and they work well. They come in 100 rd boxes and are a little pricey.

Aquila makes a subsonic bullet . I have the same problem with squirrels ...I planted a Dogwood in the backyard Saturday afternoon and SUnday Morning a Squirrel actually bit the tree twice and was attacking it(maybe its rabid) anyway I got a hold of Mr Gamo but the offender never showed up again. ;) That Gamo just literally stones those squirrelss

As mentioned, the CCI CBs work...I have killed several with my Remington 541-T with these...They are as quiet as a pellet rifle, you will need to eject them by hand on a semi...

I have a trap on the way. Sorry about the spelling I mostly do graphics so I grew up looking at the pictures rather then actually reading the books.

Squirrels are very inteligent, they can get hip to your trap in no time. Then there's "what do I do with it" afterwards.
I get rabbits out of my yard with 'em.
Then dump them off at work!

Yeah i have a major squirrel problem i thought it was just one at first but then once i shot the first one the other squirrels were watching me skin him sooo that ended up being a problem and a set up a few traps. Now i've got 3 squirrels so far and more on the way. You should put some corn in a certain area and then after about a week when the squirrels are certain to go to that spot put a box trap with some corn and peanut butter. IF you really want to attract them you have to use tuna or something that stinks but that will get you some bigger stuff ex. Racoons. Then after you have the box trap set up put some snares out. As for the quiet 22 rounds look here. I have 3 houses all around me so i dont use a 22 i just use my air rifle.

I have a box of Remington subsonics thunderbolts I think will they be quiet as the cci's. I haven't shot them yet.

A buddy of mine bought a Artic Cat snowmachine that wouldn,t run for next to nothing.Took off the muffler and a squirrel had crammed it full of seeds and nest material.Cleaned it out and it started first pull................he likes that squirrel! Harold

As nchawkeye has stated, the Remington subsonics will not be as quiet due to them having a powder charge, the CB's are only powered by the primimg compound in the rim.

Try the Aguila 60gr sub-sonic. Real quiet, plenty of power to cycle the action, and they hit like a ton of bricks.

another vote for CCI CB longs or shorts...wish i could tell you how many coon we dropped outta the tree tops in someones back yard...theyd come out because the hounds were barkin and would say "heck ya kill that no good garbage eater!" coon falls...wed let the dog chew on it a little and go over and appologize once more and thank them for being understanding and theyd say "well you gunna shoot it or what" ive heard pellet rifles that are louder than CBs...

be careful though...they are still bullets and are still going to act like bullets and do what bullets do...just because they are quiet and lower powered doesnt make them a toy (i know i probably dont have to say that...but you never know whose reading and thinks "WOW! a way to make a 22 a toy gun!")

You're in Alabama - buy a suppressor/silencer. A suppressed .22 shooting subsonics will not only take care of your problem with no one the wiser, but it will also leave a grin on your face for years to come. Way too much fun.

The houses aroind me are not real close but I am very selective on my shots I am not shooting any out og the trees only off the ground and with a good back stop. I got the CB's last night so we'll see what happens this afternoon.

If you want to quiet a .22 down tape a 20 oz plastic coke bottle over the muzzle and shoot through it. It acts as a suppressor and is pretty quiet for about 3 shots then you have to change the bottle.

I am thinking of using my sons paintball gun ..I doubt they ever come back in the yard after that thing wacks them and the ballsare ecologically friendly.

To make the paintballs a little harder hitting you could store a bunch in the freezer. Getting hit with a frozen paintball would be like getting hit with a rock.

That's a great idea;) I am his official paintball tech and the last time I regulated the gun I shot at his little red wagon in the yard. It dented the wagon floor with the balls I used. He gets a pretty good welt when hit by them. I can only imagine how it would punish a 2lb squill.

It'll kill them like you hit them with the truck. I used to have one when I was younger.... its holy hell on woodpeckers. You don't even have to freeze them to have them kill a squirrel. Hard part is hitting them... those markers ain't but so accurate.

I grow tomatoes every summer, and have been pretty much my entire life. When I was a kid (prior to the paintball gun) I just used a pellet gun. Worked fine if you were inside 20 yards. Now I go up to the second floor of the house, and in true redneck fashion, shoot them out the bathroom window with the .22 and CB longs. Been doing it that way for almost a decade now. Nice safe shot right into the ground, and they are so quiet that the dog can be downstairs and not even know whats going on.

His old marker wasn't very accurate but the new one he just bought shoots lights out, I cant remeber how many balls per second it shoots but it almost sounds like a real gun in the backyard..another bonus is we can color coordinate the squirrels by using different balls. :D

A bolt action is a little bit quiter than a semi-auto and so is a pump action .22. For quiet and legal, it is hard to beat .22 shorts in a bolt action rifle. You could also use BB caps or CB caps but they don't have very much power if you are wanting to hunt with them. I used to hunt squirrels with a .22 rifle and .22 short hollow points. You could sit under a tree and kill 2 or 3 from one tree. they didn't seem to be bothered by the little pop of the short and would be out very soon after you had just shot one out of the same tree.

Of course, you could put a noise supressor (silencer) on a bolt action rifle and shoot sub-sonic rounds but you had better be sure that you are in compliance with all of the laws concerning having and using a silencer. I'm pretty sure that they are not legal for hunting anywhere, though. So, you'd be limited to shooting targets or plinking at cans with it.

The bb cap just mentioned is a nice short distance squirrel killer but they tend to be sort of hard to keep accurate. Its a .22 round ball, not a bullet shaped projectile. For a long time I have an old sears .22 single shot and fed the bb caps to squirrels and rabbits using it for years. After trying the cb caps that was all I have run thru it now.

I got that gun in 1963 and shot nothing but short hollow points in it for squirrels and rabbits while hunting. I have no idea how many pheasants hit the dinner table using it. I don't know if I ever shot a long or long rifle thru it. Been around a long while but the cb caps are still keeping critters in check along with the pellet gun.

As much as it rankles me to see people necroposting, it rankles me just as much to see such blatantly incorrect information being passed off.

There are a great number of states where suppressors are legal for hunting, and have been for many years.

If you don't know of what you speak and you pass on incorrect information based on your personal presumption, you're not actually contributing knowledge.

I was going to post about the same thing Nomercy did. Little bugger beat me too it. I have cans for all my AR's and hunt with them all the time in Texas, Alabama, Florida (since 2014), Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. I think all in all you can use a can in 40 states. I'd have to look that up but that was the last number I remember. Might be more now.

22 short or 22 no powder. Both sound like a light chilly fart.
