I personally use a 50BMG with armor piercing rounds for my brush bustin gun.

I set up a .223 for my son tohunt with for his first season- but after a day at the range I don't think he is ready yet.

When he is ready, what grain/style bullet would those who have been succesful with the .223 recommend?

DaveC - 55gr Soft points, and 60gr Nosler Partitions is what I've used with success. If you handload maybe load up some Barnes TSXs, I will probably load a box of 'em this fall and shoot some does in the extended season with them and my AR15.

I'd shoot as heavy a bullet as that gun can handle. If you have a fast twist (1:7 or 1:8) then you can get away with shooting 70 and 80 gr bullets. Might even be able to shoot 70s with a 1:9. If you have anything with a slower twist than that, stick with a 55-60gr bullet. Make sure its not a varmint bullet. You'll want a partition or TSX as recommended.

DD, I gotta hand it to ya Bud! For a fella not tryin to stir sheet, you sure can pick a fine paddle!
BTW, I've always considered the .223 to be a little too light, but I'm thinking about using my EBG (Bushmaster M4) on deer this year!

LOL I guess Im just gonna have to call that a failed attempt at humor... I was sleepy when I made it and I thought it would turn out funny but after looking again it was pretty sarcastic.....so I changed it..lol.
