RE: What Caliber would you pick for deer/elk/moose???
"....I've been a .30-06 fan for years. It can handle all three species listed. However, after purchasing my .300 WSM for a mule deer hunt last fall, I now prefer it. There is plenty of factory ammo available, and federal ammunition loads their .300 WSM slightly superior to their .300 WM. The recoil in the .300 WSM only slightly more than the .30-06, yet it delivers more than 500lb more energy. The low trajectory makes it ideal for those 300 yard shots (on the cut overs, power lines, or out west)
I'll never sell my .30-06, but it will spend more time in the safe...."

30-06 is the camp minimum for our elk camp....
It works satisfactorily, but itis a "jack of all trades, master of none" round, though.

Ok just a die hard I guess 30-06 though I would like to have a 280 Rem . The 06', much like it's lil broyher the 308 ,
can be loaded with bullits from 45 - 250 grains and over 4000 fps and will produce over 3000 ftlbs at the muzzle .
How much more rifle could you want for ?
Beware the man with 1 gun he probably knows how to use it .

I'd choose the .243,or the .270. Heard of .224 cals catch some moose too. Well, my ruger 77/22 caught a moose one shot, if you know the behind the ear trick, so no damaged meat!!!

The 300 remington ultramag offers impressive ballistics and tend to be very accurate. I have a friend who gets 3" groups at 600 yards with one.He is using 200 grain accubonds. One of the points to consider is if you are into reloading or not. Remington offers 3 levels of ammo for the 300 ultra which certainly adds to the versatility for the non reloaders. I have shot 3 caribou and 1deer withfull bore 300 ultra loads, my limited experience indicates to much gunfor both species at short ranges. Exit holes the size of basketballscreate more meat damge than I care for. A couple of my buddies accused meof attempting to behead a caribou I neck shot last year. I intend on loading the cartridge lighter for future deer/caribou hunts. The range of 30-06 performance tobetter than 300 win mag performance with factory ammo gives the 300 ultra the need for consideration.
