I am thinking aboutbuilding a custom long range rifle and am debating between these two calibers. I am looking a punching paper at 600 yards or so mainly but would like the option of hunting deer as well if I ever get good enough.

I realize that the militay uses the 308 a lot and its one of the most popular for extended range, but why do they use it over the 30-06? What would make it a better long range contender?
Take the money that you were going to spend on a custom and get a Remington 700P in .308, then use the rest of the money to get a nice scope and reloading equipment. Once you shoot that one and learn how to load for it, then get yourself a custom LR rig.
Jeepkid I think you hit the nail on the head there. I have a tendency to jump into this a little to quick. This would be a good way to learn the basics without breaking the bank.

Between the two rounds you mentioned, if you handload ordo not - get the 308. Slightly more accurate and definitely less kick with no noticable difference in effectiveness hunting.

I would also argue that inhunting situations, the 30-06 is as effectively accurate as the .308.

Am still trying to do the math and figure how two bullets of same caliber, same grain weight, and same BC, for arguments sake, fired from identical rifles, can have different accuracy ratings from within the ranks of the Experts....

Given that one is inherentlyslower that the other as the ONLY major difference,THAT, must infact, translate intoa lesser recoil factor.

With recoil being a large player with non skilled rifleman it then stands to reason why the majority of "shooters" can stump for the .308 as being "more accurate" than the nastier kicking '06.

Flinch do frig up a "group".

People crack me up..............................

I am not here to argue either, but if one is indeed more accurate than the other, then it matters not if in a hunting situation or paper punching. One is more accurate period. Not saying that one is, but the consenses is, that one is.

I would not agree with this. When target shooting you shoot repeatedly at a known a distance and have the ability to "dial in" factors like bullet drop and wind drift.

When hunting it is often aone shot opportunity at an estimated range and estimated windage. This makes the shooters estimatesa far bigger factor than any inherent cartridge advantage. It is in this scenario Iwould favor the 06 because it shoots a 15 grain heavier bullet at the same speed as the 308. This would generally improve BC and tend to minimize shooter error in wind drift and even range andthat more thanmakes up for any minute accuracy advantage the 308 may have.

but he asked for a long range gun, 1/8 of inch difference at 100 yds equalls a whole bunch at 600 yds, like 6 or more inches.

I thought 1/8 of inch at 100 yards (.125 MOA) would be 3/4 of inch at 600 yards

for a long range caliber, the .308 is w/out a doubt more accurate, and can kill anything elk/moose size or smaller. however, i use a weatherby custom vanguard in .30-06 which is just as accurate as my dads .7mm-08(based on 308 cartridge. i use 30-06 b/c i can hunt any animal on NA continent if i felt like it(and hunting funds from parents permitted ) . all in all, a lot of it depends on the gun and shooter, not the cartridge.
