Slug gun for Boar?

Wasn't sure if i saw this topic before or not, but looking for a night hog hunting gun and have been thinking about a lever action but someone suggested a slug gun.

Any thoughts on using a slug gun (12ga or 410?) for hog hunting. Not looking for long range but would be a less than 100yd shot under spotlighting.

If slug is a good idea then what gun would be best? Cheap and I'm a lefty.

I'm a lefty and just bought an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe 20 gauge for $250. I was looking for something lefty and this was an option as well as a Browning BPS in 20 gauge. The price tag of the H&R was the choice because the Browning was $350 more. Call me cheap, but I'm happy with the H&R. I've had sub 2" groups at 100 yards. The downside is it's a single shot and it is somewhat heavy, but a good gun. I would have loved the BPS, but couldn't handle the price tag since I have a few things coming up that are important and expensive. Hope this helps.

Thats pretty close to what i am looking for, but you are right having a single shot is a problem. The way night hunts go, sometimes the first shot isnt always on target and a followup is necessary. I have a Browning 30-06 so i know they are not the most inexpensive gun maker. Ill look around so more and hopefully some others will report on to see what their opinion is as well.

BTW what ammo are you using with that slug gun to get those groups?

A slug gun is more than up to the task for hunting hogs. For those 100 yard and in shots, you will be fine.
I have a Browning BPS with a Hastings rifled slug barrel w/ cantilever scope mount. Out to about 100 yards, Mr. Piggie is in grave danger.

As far as the ammo goes, you will have to find what your particular gun likes. My gun has developed a taste for the "finer things" (aka 3" Federal Premium Hydrashock Sabots) ~$3.00/shell. With them I can get right around a 3" group at 100 yards if I am shooting off of a sled......in my hands.......not so much.....

The pump is nice for a quick follow up shot as well.

Great post...

I do not use anything other than my H&R Ultra slug 12 gauge with 300gr. Hornady SST sabots...with a Leopold scope.....this gun is a little large and made for long range but the gun will meet the demands...

I got a H&R 20 ga. slug gun and even though its a single shot if your ready for a second shot you can reload pretty quick and with a sst's slug i can get like 2" groups at 100 yards.

I sometimes hunt boar with my Remington semi-auto 10 guage shotgun. Federal manufactures a 1 3/4 oz. (about 750 grains)3 1/2 inch magnum 10 guage rifled slug which can make a very big hole in anything you shoot within a hundred yards.

I have a Mossberg 500 with Rifled Slug Barrel. My gun likes the Lightfield Slugs, Hornady SST and Federal Barnes Expander Sabot. The SST's and Expanders are good up to 200 yards, in fact they are guaranteed. The SST's are zeroed at 150 and 6 inches of drop at 200. My Mossberg is a tack driver for sure, 3 inch groups at 125 yards. Haven't tried anything over that.

A slug gun will have alot of power behind it. you could go with a NEF pardner pump 12 guage slugun. I got one last year for 200 dollars and killed a turkey and a deer with it last year.
