Rem 8mm Mag
 

I bought a used Rem 700 8mm mag Planning on using it out west for elk/moose Have 2 boxes of Rem 200gr Safari Premier shells. What do you think about shooting out to 400yds. Where can I but other rounds?

Get some brass and get some FL dies for reloading.400 yards or farther is quite feasible.Similar use as .338 Win Mag and Jim Carmicheal of Outdoor Life was a early supporter of the 8mm Rem Mag.Lots of data and 8mm bullets available.........................Harold

Sounds like a good reason to start reloading, if you don't already. As pioneer says, the 8mm Rem, is real similar to the .338 in performance. You can probably get loaded ammo from Cabelas etc, but it will be pricey. Craig Boddington is also a fan of the Remington 8.

What Pioneer said! Load for it. That's the only way you'll ever get the real potential out of this fine cartridge! Use Nosler 200-grain Partitions, 200-grain Accubonds, or perhaps a heavy bullet from those makers oldelk suggested.... (OOPS JUST LOOKED AT NORTHFORK-DIDN'T SEE A .323 BULLET THERE AT ALL...but that Swift A-Frame 220-grainer looks like a great choice for the 8mm Rem Mag.)

Load them as hot as you can commensurate with safety and acceptable accuracy, and thisround will sure let you knock off elk, moose & big bears. I would not use it on really big bears beyond 150 yards or so, but for elk & moose - if you learn to keep those bullets in the vital zone on such game at 400 yards, it will do the job.

the 8mm rem mag is awesome! certainly a 400yd elk gun, and def more gun than a .338 win mag or .300 win mag I believe.

I believe it was kinda the first of the new ultra mag type 300-338's, though it failed, nto sure why, maybe cause it was named "8mm" that's one of those rounds I wished had made it.

Certainly a great round that may be worth owning/hunting with, not sure how available ammo is, if at all? sure rem prob still makes a round or two. I'd probably stick to 200gr or 220gr rounds.....and ya dont worry about an elk at 400yds,

Well unlike the previous post I don't think the 8mm Rem Mag is more gun than the 338. The 300 - yes. The 8mm RM is another great cartridge that just didn't gain enough popularity here in the states.I wish I had the $$ when I was younger. We had a gun shop that couldn't give them away. He had a deal that if you bought a case of ammo, he would throw in a Rem 700 BDL 8mm Mag.

Wow ! Dont' hear that cartridge mentioned often.I know only one guy that uses this cartridge. Youwill find that factory ammo is ratehr scarce and expensive.Remington more or less has long given up on this cartridge, just as they did on the 65 Rem. mag. and 350 Rem. Mag. ... and i suspect will on the SAUM stuff as well. All that aside, this must bea wiz bang set-up. My bud has takenabout every thing in NA with his. And by the way, he long ago started hand loading his 8mm Rem. Mag. ammo.

With 200NP's or the 220 Swift, the 8 mag. makes an excelent brown bear round... And that means it will work for everything else on down too...

NOONE should be shooting at big bears (that aren't already wounded) beyond 150 yards no matter what they are carrying...

I'd buy 500-1000 brass and your set for life.It's still available here in Canada.Too bad metric calibers aren't more accepted in North America ie 5mm rimfire etc...........The 7x57 and lately the 6.5X55 are still out there doing what they do best slaying large game with minimal recoil......Harold *I use a FN Safari in a .308 Norma Mag but brass can be fabricated from 300 H+H or .338 in a pinch
