.243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
What grain bullets do you .243win guys prefer on varmints/coyotes?
|
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I like shooting 55 grain silvertips.

RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
60 grain Sierra HPs
or 75 grain Hornady HPs |
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
IMO the 243 has an advantage as a varmint cartridge if you take advantage of the ability to shoot the 90 and 100 grain bullet. The 243 shines with a 100 grain pill at or over 3,000 fps.
When you drop down to the 75 grain pill and lower you loose your advantage. The 22 caliber 75 grain bullet has a better BC than the 75 grain 243 pill, with approximately the same velocity. Try the 100 grain Nosler Ballistic tip. You should get great long range capability out of that bullet. Tom. |
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I agree head0001 ,If you can pry my .220 swift from my hands and I pick my .243 I will be shooting 100 grain bullets.I have that calbur in a H&R bull barrel, that little rifle will surprise ya how well it shoots.

RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I had an old Savage 110 years ago in 243 that would not shoot anything less than 75 gr bullets. Anything smaller would keyhole the target. I attributed it to the rate of twist cause it shot 100 gr bullets extremely well. But if your rifle will shoot the 55 gr bullets good I would try them or go to the 75 gr ones.

RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
Are you planning on saving the hides?? Do you reload???
I usually use either the Federal Premium 85gr Sierra GamdKing HPBT or the Remington 100 gr CoreLokts... But...I don't save the hides...:D |
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I used the 95gr Combined Technology BTs on coyotes for almost a whole year, and I never wrecked one coyote hide out of 20+ dogs. I was actually pretty darned impressed after the first couple, thinking I was lucky, then I never did wreck one. I did keep the shots behind the shoulder blades.

RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
no reloading, so yes factory ammo only.....
Don't own a .22 cal yet, but if I do it would be a .22-250 probably, maybe a .220 swift, but I forsee shooting 45-50grs not 75gr? does anyone load 75gr in either of these two? also I like 4000fps out of a .22 i think. Probably will just end up using whatever I use on antelope and taking it for coyotes.....so something in the 90-100gr range. though wondered if any of you guys loved the 55gr, or 75gr bullets for the .243 |
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I shoot everything from 40 to 75 grain pills in 22 caliber rifles. The main reason I use different grain bullets is the distances that I shoot.
From 0-250 yards I shoot a 40 grain bullet 100-350 I shoot a 50 grain bullet 200-600 I shoot a 75 grain bullet I normally know what field I am going to hunt before I go, so I take the appropriate rifle with me. If I only had one rifle it would be a 22-250 with a 1in8 twist. Fortunately I have several, with several twists. Tom. |
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
85 grain bthp for anthing from gophers to whitetails..
|
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I haven't had a chance to shoot mine yet but when I do the first two loads I'm going to try are the Winchester 55 grn and the Hornady 58 grn Vmax. My local shop said they have heard really good results from the hornady rounds. After that I will try the Federal Vshocks in 55 and 70 grn.

RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I like 70 gr speer hps for yotes and 100 gr sierra gk's for deer.
|
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I use hornady 58 gr v-max. Didnt have much luck with the 55 grainers....
|
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
I use the Hornady "Custom" 100 grain bullets for Deer and Coyotes.....haven't lost an animal yet with my Browning .243 Rifle!I don't use any lighter bullets because I just don't want to keep wasting bullets/money re-sighting my gun each time I change weights?
|
RE: .243 Win. Varmint rounds? What grains?
It would be nice to find 2 quality bullets of weights of maybe 85gr +/- like 85 softs/HPs for the varmints, and something nicer but same weight/flight for antelope/deer, though it will be antelope primarily, I think I may just end up using whatever I use on antelope for coyotes as well, anyone see a real problem with this? say a 90 or 95 soft point etc.....?
