Default 22-250 range?

I got a remington 700 sps in 22-250 with the 26 in bullbarrel and was wanting to try some long range shooting with it.What kind of ranges do you think it should be capable of.Note this is just for target shooting. And what kind of ammunition would you reccomend.I am going to be going for accuracy,so i don't want to buy the cheap $15 box of reminton.

That Remington is a 1in14?? Correct?? You will need to shoot the lighter bullets for best accuracy(IMO). You can try the heavier bullets but they may not stabilize. You should be good up to 50 or 55 grain.

As far as range is concerned, I would say 300 to 500 yards if there is not a lot of wind. A little farther if there is no wind. I can effectively get 600 yards out of mine but I have a 1in8 twist and I shoot the 75's.

Try the Black Hills ammo. I have seen some great groups with the Black Hills ammo. Tom.

That round will go for a mile, but shooting it accurate is up to the rifle and shooter.Like head0001 said 600 yards is a long shot.Try it some time see how you fare.Make sure you get a target scope or Long range, those cross hairs get really big past 500 yards!
You will never get the potential from that round shooting factory ammo. You will have to reload to do it right.Taylor make the round for the rifle so to speak.

Try a box of Remington ammo loaded with 50 grain Hornady V-Max. Those put 5 rounds in a quarter-sized group at 100 yards out of my Savage rifle.

i own the same rifle.

max range?? alot farther than most people can shoot! lol..like HEAD said, the 1-14 twist likes short, light bullets...which means wind becomes a bigger factor which makes those real long shots harder...ive shot groundhogs with mine out to 350yds...i dont get much shooting past that, but know if i do my part, the rifle will do its.

your not going to believe me, but i fired several sub-moa groups with the UMC 40rd value pack ammo! no joke...100yds i could cover the 5shot groups with a dime...50gr hollow point ammo...dummie me, i found that out AFTER i had 3 boxes of federal 55gr ballistic tips in the mail...i was waiting on them to come in and they got shipped later than they should have..so i bought the umc stuff just to get me by...hit the range..sighted them in and was amazed...

the 55gr ballistic tips shoot well...but groups are slightly larger...did seem alot more consistant than the UMC ammo though. i want to try some REAL light ballistic tips when i run out of the 55gr ammo i have still...

mine is a great shooting rifle...41 hogs last summer and 1 so far this year...

everything is still factory...even the trigger...trigger aint bad..just stiff. put a harris bipod on it and a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40AOT on it...i love it....

Thanks guys for the info.I have the same bi-pod on my rifle also.I haven't gotten real serious with shooting it yet.It is just now warming up to the point you can enjoy the trip to the range with out freezeing your butt off.

I have a ruger in that cal.it shoots good I have busted a few hogs with it and even a coyote or two out to about my brother range finder says 410 yds i think it needed bateries. That was with the umc factory loads thru a simmons a tech 3-9.

IF you are really going for accuracy, you need to handload for it, and develop the most accurate load you can. This will require testing a bunch of different bullets and powder types, maybe even cases and primers. BUT, only change ONE VARIABLE AT A TIME. Start with a good bullet of known accuracy, like aSierra 50 or 55-grain, and experiment with powders first.

With factory ammo, the most expensive may not shoot the best IN YOUR RIFLE!!! Even that "cheap $15.00/box remington" may prove to be the best. Again, as all rifles are individuals, you will have to test a lot of different loads to find the most accurate one. And when you do, you will need to buy a case ofit quick with the same lot #, as ammo can vary considerably from lot to lot, even in the "exact same load"!

I once had a .22/250 on a Mexican Mauser action. That rifle would keep all shots in the "V" ring of the Army "A" target at 500 yards on most days, unless the winds were over 10 MPH.
