Hand Gun Questions
Me and my fiance are both bow hunters and both were thinking about getting a hand gun because we do have predators and hogs in the area. Were wondering what type of hand gun we were looking for and that is pretty user freindly.
What are some of the guns you guys use or refer... |
RE: Hand Gun Questions
Ruger super redwawk .44mag 10" s.s. barrel.
You can mount a scope on this model if you choose. 6-8" groups @ 50-60 yards free hand. I wacked a nice 8 pointer last year single handed over my shoulder @ 15 yards and dropped in his tracks. I am now hooked! |
RE: Hand Gun Questions
I would humbly suggest a good .357 mag or .41 mag double actionor single action revolver with a 4"-6"barrel. It's the world's MOST versaitle handgun. You can use full power loads for hunting or defense, low power loads for plinking/practice,easy to carry, and extremely easy to learn to shoot well without excessive recoil, and fairly lightweight.

I'm going to have to go with the .357 magnum. I have a Taurus Tracker 4" barrel. There are some pretty potent hunting loads from Buffalo Bore for this caliber and all of your standard ammo makers have really good Personal defense loads. When you're ready to do some plinking you can load it with .38 Specials. One of the benefits of the tracker is that it has a 7 shot cylinder. Most will have 6 shots and the smaller frames will be 5. There are other better handguns out there, but I don't think you can beat the Taurus for it's price. Another one by Taurus you can consider would be the Judge. It can be loaded with 45 colt or .410 shot shells. About the same size as the Tracker but the .410 shot shells are great snake medicine and really effective close range personal protection. RE: Hand Gun Questions
S&W 329PD. This pistol is made of Titanium and Scandium. It is extremely lightweight(about 1-1/2#). Cartridge is 44 magnum. But I would recommend you shoot a light load or a 44 special. It is also very accurate, and compact. You can carry it everywhere you go, and not even know you are carrying it. Tom.

RE: Hand Gun Questions
I shot a .357 this weekend and loved it! My only concern; is it big enough to take a hog down and if so what ammo should i use?
Thanks again for all your help guys! Oh and I like the pictures so please if you have pics please post them! |
RE: Hand Gun Questions
While a .357 will take down a hog,the ONLY bullet you should use is a very hard cast(non expanding) bullet in a full power load. This to insure that any good spinal/head shot will drop it reliably with a .357. That's why I suggested a .41 magnum-it'll drop any hog ever to walk planet with a well placed shot. A .41 will recoil more than a .357 but is noticeably less than a .44 magnum, and completely controllable and pleasent to shoot.
