Of those 2 choices I'd go with the 25-06 all day long. It shoots flat and is probably more readily available than the 6mm as well.

Gosh this one is easy. 25-06 hands down, the recoil is very mild & the results are awesome.

I thought you said he had a choice? The 25-06 no decision to make.

While they're both fine rounds, if he has to choose to have only one of those 2, then 25/06 for sure.

No a 25-06 is too light for elk & moose.
The 30-06 is a good starting point for a elk/moose rifle.

I have them both and if given the choice between the two........as much as I love my 6mm Rem, I'd have to go with the 25.06. It's just a better all around round.

By most people's standards, no. But if he uses a sturdy bullet and keeps his shots within say 250 yards, then it will definitely kill an elk or moose. I have a friend who has killed several elk with his 25-06. I've even known people who have killed elk with a .243 from close range. However, I'd suggest getting a cartridge with a little more oomph.

I love the 6mm... I would suggest he go with that one.. It is a great cartridge and even though the 25-06 is a good round as well.. I don't see many more boxes of shells on the shelves than I do with the 6mm

25-06. Just for ease of finding bullets alone

this is his first and only rifle? of the 2 I'd have to say .25-06 is a much better all around. though of the two cartridges I think the 6mm does what it does bettter than what the .25-06 does, but 6mm rem is essentially fallen by the wasteside, the .25-06 is still very popular. I'd take a .270 of a .25-06. But ya I think the .25-06 is the only choice of those 2.

While I agree that the .30/'06 is a better choice for elk and moose, with the proper bullets for the job, the .25/'06 has and will still kill plenty of such critters (Elmer Keith to the contrary notwithstanding!!). Use a 115-to 120-grain Barnes TSX or Nosler Partition bullet for elk and moose, and don't take any shots much over 300 yards. The main problem is those small bullets slow down too quickly, and they need velocity to kill the bigger game well.

(My daughter-in-law kills her bull elk evry year with a .243-I really object to "absolute" answers to questions like this!!)
