red dot scopes
 

I just bought a red dot for my ar-15. I like the looks of them and was wondering what everyone thought of them. I haven't got out to shoot it so I was wondering what to expect. How acurate are these things?

I like red dot sights on handguns and shotguns. For me,they lack precision on rifles,especially past point blank ranges.

Red dots for AR's are not a true accuracy item. They are ment to aquire your close in (read 100yds or less) quickly and be able to put multiple shots on target quickly. They also work well for shooting moving targets. Remember that you do not close one eye with red dots, you shoot with both eyes open to keep your peripheral vision to aquire other threats/targets. As far as accuracy is concerned; you should be able to keep them inside 4" or so at 100 yds depending on how fast you are shooting.

Have fun with it, they are a blast once you get the nack of keeping both eyes open.

no idea what size dot I'll have to look it up. It's not a real expensive one just figured I'd try it. Its a BSA RD30 (maybe the model) Seems nice so far.

Thats good info. The kind of thing I was thinking I'd get. 4 inch at 100 yards is plenty.

As for shooting both eyes open. I do that anyway. Always have. I shoot traditional archery that way as well so I think I'll take to it ok.

had one on my slug gun, but replaced it with 1-4x scope, for those longer shots.....red dot is great for stalking...quick shots......but i think the 1-4 scope gives you alot of options and that longer range option

Thanks for the info. My shotgun has a 4x on it and I'm comfortable with a 125-150 yard shot with it (slugs) for deer. I never get shots like that but I practice them.

My AR is the short (M4) version ...I think its called a CAR-15. I have a longer version too. I just wanted something to put up top for coyote hunting. I have the see thru mount so I can still use open sights.

Probably not the best coyote gun but it should work.

I have an EOTech on my short AR15, and it works good for fast target acquisition, and getting on a coyote sized critter and dispatching it out to 200-250 is fairly easy, once you get used to the sight. I have a harder time trying to shoot smaller objects (jackrabbits, etc) past 100 yards with one shot kills. Mowing 'em down after the first miss is pretty easy though. ;)

I swap between a Leupold Mark 4 Tactical 3.5-10 and the EOTech depending on what I am doing with my gun.
