bolt action or semi auto....what do you like better on .22's?
 

Im wondering what you guys like better with a .22..........semi auto or bolt action. im getting one and also wondered about downsides AND upsides to each.

I prefer the semi auto. I shoot .22's mostly for fun and that means alot of shooting and rapid fire. I do hunt with squirrels with my Ruger 10/22 but the semiauto works fine for me, I can shoot 1'' at 50yards off of shooting sticks so the tree rats won't stand a chance.

I have both, a Remington 552 that I bought in 1971 when I was 16...I killed a truck load of squirrels with it...I bought a Remington 541-T about 10 years ago, topped it with a Leupold 3x9x33 compact scope, it has an adjustable trigger and will group inside a half inch at 50 yards...It extended my range on head shot squirrels...

The 552 is one of the finest .22s ever made, but it won't shoot as accurately as the 541...

bolt because that's what my deer rifle is, so I want my 22 to have the same action type, as I use it for form andflinchpractice

Give me an accurate Ruger 10-22 and a bucket of rotary clips, 1000 rds. of ammo. It will do everything I ever need done with a 22.

I enjoy the semi .22's. They are fun to shoot, for sure. But when it comes to hunting, I'm not permitted to use them in Pennsylvania. No semi-auto rifles for hunting here. Therefore, I shoot my old trusty Rem. 511 bolt. Got an old Weaver Variable on it, and it will outshoot most of the newer .22's out there today. It's been my go-to squirrel rifle since I was 14 yrs. old. And that was more than a week or two ago...........

im planning on hunting squirrels and coons and rabbits. i might get a semi auto marlin model 60r ruger 10/22 and then later get a bolt action savage .22 magnum
how do you make the ruger 10/22's more accurate inexpensively?

A gunsmith once told me it was cheaper to test a variety of .22 ammo out of the stock barrel and find what shoots most accurately. At that point, you decide if it's accurate enough for you or not.

How to make the ruger accurate inexpensively first of is to float the barrel. It will do wonders for it.

You have been asking alot about .22's and bouncing around alot with what you want because of other peoples opinions. My advice is to go out and buy one and be happy with it. .22's are suppose to be fun so stop getting all worked up about it. Any will do you good if you find something you don't like about it just get someting different next time. You can never have enough 22's. And get the lr first the ammo cost a tenth of the magnum but that just my opinion.

Wal-Mart has the regular carbines for $185 and the Deluxe SS 24" barreled ones for $235.

Ok, I gotta ask...this seems to have evolved intoa epic proportinal escapade now. It's a regualr ole .22lr chambered base-line rifle. It's not a quest for a Cooper or Dakota or a classic Holland & Holland tri-bore. It's a plinker .22lr gun. Is it really such a huge decision? Not intending to seem harsh or insensitive to a situation but this has been realllllllllly drawn out with a lot of simplicity. Can't see where anything hasn't gone unanswered. These will be banned or obsolete by the ime a chocie has been made. ;)

sorry about all the questions i just want to get a good gun because i worked real hard for the money and dont want to waste it on a crap gun ;)

I can appreciate wanting a decent gun for your money. Just gotta realize that each of these models has long shown it's quality in the numbers alone that they've been made and sold. That testament alone shows something.
