Picked up anWinchester 94. Need some input on restoration.

I picked up an old Winchester 94 30/30, a 1978 model. I am wanting some info on what to use to strip the old blueing off from the reciever. The stuff that is on there is more of a laquer than a blueing and you can see a couple of streaks in it from the previous owner using a solvent to clean it up. Or is there a type of blueing that I can use to touch up the existing? The Beachwood Casey stuff that I tried works on the barrel, but not on the reciever, they are two totally different types of blueing.

Tuk I do not know how to explain this, but from what I understand the receiver can not be re-blued. I am sure someone else can explain it better thanI, but what is on the rifle is not bluing. Check over on the Leverguns forum. Those guy's can explain it better. Tom.

From what I understand, the alloy/heat treatment of the receiver of that vintage defies blueing.

That makes sense. I know that when I tried the regular blueing on it, it just wiped off and didnt do anything. Oh well, I dont mind the worn look of the gun anyways, that is why I picked it over newer/nicer ones.

As the guys above mentioned, durring those years Winchester used a cheap alloy that cannot be blued by conventional means. All is not lost however, you could do something like Duracoat which would look nice, and be very durable to boot.

well i dont know what it looks like underneath that but on mine, there was a cheap blueing on it and i used this stuff for takin dirt and wax off the bottom of skiis/snowboards, called swix base cleaner, its like a mixture of orange oil and wd-40, and it worked good and nothing bad has happened to it since i did it a year ago so i think its safe...
