20 Gauge rifled slug
WHo has used a 20 gauge slug on Deer? I have experience with 12 gauge buckshot and slugs but never entertained the 20 gauge slug. Am I missing out on something?

RE: 20 Gauge rifled slug
Not really missing out, but they are just as effective within their range. One of the guys I hunt with in our january season, uses a Remington 1100 20ga, he says they kick less, but that hasn't been my experience. I used a mossberg 500 20ga for a couple of seasons, before I went to a purpose built slug gun. It worked just as well, as i said, within range.

RE: 20 Gauge rifled slug
The 20ga. has less recoil, thus it is more accurate. The 20 will take a deer down just as quick as a 12.......I still use my 12 from time to time, but my H&R ULTRA DELEUXE in 20 is my main goto gun

RE: 20 Gauge rifled slug
If I ever buy a new slug gun, I'm 95% sure I'm getting a 20ga benelli semi auto.
I think 12ga slugs are what like 300-350gr? 20ga are i dunno 200-275gr? either way if you ask me this is one huge bullet, that puts you in .375 caliber.....sure they're not going 2800fps, but theyre going 2000fps or 2100fps nowadays. I think they're almost identical in bullet trajectory, 12ga may still have them,a nd sure more energy, but how much energy do you need/want? its funny to me guys still insist on a 12ga slug, kinda like saying I dunno 20ga slugs just seem kinda light, but then you go elk hunting with a .270 or .30-06 and think anyone with a 300 or 338mag is overkill, when youre shooting bullet weights in the .375H&H range.... I have no prob with a 12ga kick, or weight, but I like the idea of a 20ga, lighter bullets, lighter gun, maybe quieter? as if that matters. I think they both kill deer just as well as the other, so saying you need more gun, isn't really a valid point IMO, so ya you get a lighter 20ga etc.....but again that doesnt affect me much either. Just my next pick would be a 20ga, also if you ever have a son or daughter that wants to deer hunt a 20 would definitely be nicer than a 12 for them, even dad it would be nicer for. Also I've yet to shoot at a deer with a slug over 100yds, so energy at 200yds does affect me and shooting a deer with a slug at 50yds, I wonder if the 20 would be even more effective than a 12 would be! |
RE: 20 Gauge rifled slug
Think of the 20ga, as a muzzleloader pushing out a 250gr. sabot bullet. If the smokepole can do it without a problem so can the 20ga

RE: 20 Gauge rifled slug
I picked up a 20ga about a month ago for next year when my nephews come
hunting.Went out and shot it and was very impressed,I have no problems with the recoil from a 12ga,but the 20 has hardley any recoil a lot lighter and shoots every bit as good out to 100yds. |

IF you are talking about using a smooth-bore to shoot Foster type hollow-base "rifled" slugs, then IMO you still will find the 12 to be superior. In the 20-ga smooth-bore,Brenneke slugs are enough superior to the Foster type to justify the higher price, IF your gun will shoot them accurately! |
RE: 20 Gauge rifled slug
I do believe there's a 20 ga. 3-1/2" slug in the works and slug guns to fire it... I'm going to wait and see what that pans out to be...

RE: 20 Gauge rifled slug
It seems fairly popular now days for people to buy 20ga slug. I myself have not and probably won't. I like the extra energy a 12Ga carries and the bigger hole is nice too. I guess if I worried about recoil, I might consider 20ga.

I guess if I worried about recoil, I might consider 20ga. IMO both are overkill on a deer. And nowadays both are popular, I thought I did read something on a 3.5" 20ga as well, but geez, I dunno. I shoot 2 3/4" 12ga, I think most of the newer high velocity slugs are 2.75" anyway. so a 3" 20ga I think is fine. but that would be interesting to see a 3.5" 20ga, then its kinda back to a 12ga isnt it? Kinda like the 3.5" isnt that like a 10ga? I wanted a 10ga til i looked at the tables and found that a 12ga basically beats anything a 10ga can do, esp in the 3.5" though cant you get a 3.5" 10ga? |
