Yes 400 is MAX for my eyesight these days.I use 4X Leupolds and now need 3X9's.Just cause you can hit game farther doesn't mean it's ethical to shoot.I had a buddy with a .220 Swift that could hit coyotes farther than he could kill them. The .243 or .250 Sav is best kept under 300 yards although they can kill a little farther out. They both lack knockdown power at extended ranges..The only animals I've shot farther than 400 were previously wounded by others with the exception of a cow moose I hit twice with a .270 at a rangeI shant repeat here.Only got 8" penetration taking out heart and one lung.Half the fun is stalking close as conditions permit undetected and making a one shot kill.If others are competant shooting farther have at her I know my limitations.Harold

Since you want a Tikka, I'd go with the 25-06 as it matches the action length better than the .243. The next 08 case from the .243 is the .260 rem and is pretty much a ballistic twin with the 25-06.Any of themwill be fine for deer and prong's. I'd pass on the elk with them myself.

Considering I've been hunting for 40+ years [over 120 head of assorted big game taken including grizzly]and worked as a guide witnessing untold kills and tracking down and finishing the cripples from others that couldn't tell 100 yards from 300.I take with a grain of salt others claiming 600 shots as routine and commonplace. Most can't do it! Much less with a factory hunting rifle.Take away the shooting bench in real hunting conditions and well you get the picture. Not talking about beanfield custom rifles or military sniper models.I have nothing against any rifle caliber based on the .308 parent case including the .243.But it will never be a .25-06 by any means.Am I a green rookie? I think not................................Harold

i have a couple friends up north who hunt elk moose and caribou with 25-06 they have made 200 + yards on moose 300 to 400 + yards with Elk and even mad a really good shot on a caribou a 537 yards one shot kill so if i had to pick over the 25-06 or the 243 i would defintley go for the 25-06 basicly a neck down 30-06 so what ever

Your not alone with that assumption.I load 120gr Hornady HP's on top of 54gr of H4831SC and Fed mag primers in Win brass. They always exit any deer so far broadside and 3/4 of the way through a med sized black bear last spring. The late Bob Milek [G+A]shot lots of deer and elk with his .257 Roberts.I talked to the boys at Hornady about this bullet and they had sucessfully tested it on elk.So did my son on his meat bull.Blew right through at 400 yards.A lady friend of ours used a .257 Weatherby Mag on moose every fall with great results.Fed stoutly constructed bullets and someone who can shoot you'll be enjoying steaks.I like Jack O'Conner's quote of the mythical Indian guide that said " any gun good gun ,if you shoot straight".He wasn't a proponent of 1/4 mile shooting either.Elmer Keith was but he had the good sense to use a magnum. They didn't see eye to eye on a good day.........JMO Harold

I have nothing bad to say about .243s. But... anyone who tells you a .243 is great for deer and a 25-06 can't handle deer-sized game is either A)Dangerouslystupid, B) Selling something, or... C) both.
