That's tough. I love my Knight Bighorn, and my Marlin 30-30, but My Mossberg 500 is a shotgun with a smooth barrell, a good home defense weapon with the tactical barrell, a rifle with my rifled barrell, and a muzzleloader with the .50 barrell. I gotta love versitility.

I agree. A Springfield M1A Scout Squad is the way to go. Legal for any kind of animals, a proven defense cartridge, and combined with the reliability of a Springfield, its hard to consider anything else.

Any accurate and reliable 30-06 that parts are available will do.
Ammo is readily available, variety of bullet types and weights, good trajectory.
Suitable for any size animal (2 or 4 legged).

I didn't know Federal builds guns?
