Cheap / Expensive Rifles?
Where is the line in the sand between cheap/moderately priced rifles?
How about moderate / expensive? under $700 cheap? over $1500 expensive? Is this all discretion/personal choice or is it more accepted generally where the price ranges fall? |
RE: Cheap / Expensive Rifles?
I think you can get inexpensive rifles cheaper than $700. Good ones.

RE: Cheap / Expensive Rifles?
I would say anything under $500 is cheap for centerfire rifles, less than $1,000 for regular "standard" factory rifles, and much over that will get you a really nice rifle-for a factory rifle.

RE: Cheap / Expensive Rifles?
Depends on what your looking for. I would say 5 to 7 hundred is average right now. However you can get some really great deals for $300 or so in the Mossberg, savage and stevens models. And you can get a Howa with a hogue stock for between 4 and 5 hundred dollars.
I honestly think much over 700 bucks and your paying for a name or custom upgrades. Paul |
RE: Cheap / Expensive Rifles?
Depends on who you talk to,gun snops will say anything less than a $1000.00 is cheap, but on lower budget $700.00 would be expensive.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
There are plenty of guns that shoot straight for cheap money. BUT - Do you like the way they look or sound. (Sound meaning your buddies ridiculing you) |
RE: Cheap / Expensive Rifles?
I only paid $400 for my REM 700 300 saum BDL NIB. Bought it less than a year ago.

Welp, don't get sucked up into all of the hype unless you are going to do some serious hunting like the "pros" do on those hunting shows. If you only hunt one week a year like I do then Remington SPS, Tikka T3 Lite, or a cheap but amazingly accurate Savage will do.
I own a Ruger M77 7mag and it sure is a nice looking rifle and well built but it needs some work done to it to make it as accurate as it should be for a 7 Mag. If I could do it all over again (and hope you ain't saying the same thing a few years down the road) then I would've gotten the Tikka T3 Lite. Good luck |

M77 man, what all needs to be done? Bedding? hand lapping? Trigger? I'm pretty sure I could walk you thru whatever needs to be done if you want. Neil

RE: Cheap / Expensive Rifles?
My 249 dollar mossberg ATR 100 gets the job done quite nicely, it shoots plenty accurate enough for any hunting situation. So in my eyes if it shoot minute of deer or whatever your shooting thats all thats required of my rifle. I then get to spend the money I saved on other gear. I'm more of a practical guy myself, I just want a gun that shoots and shoots fairly well.

RE: Cheap / Expensive Rifles?
Cheap and expensive are terms that are very relative to the individual.
Are we talking new or used? B/c I think that can make a huge difference. If I ever pay more than $1200.00 in my life for a firearm it will be a one time thing. I hunt and target shoot for fun ... not for competition or $$$. And I've been lucky enough to purchase some very excellent rifles USED riflesat what I would call bargain basement prices. There weren't necessarily real shiny and new, but they were superb values, shot great, and were mechanically perfect. I've seen people pay a pretty high dollar for a name brandand brand new-off-the-shelf firearm that I thought was so rough and sloppy when I worked the bolt and saw the metal-to-wood finish that I felt sorry for them. I paid $265.00 brand new for a Savage 110 in 30/06 back in 1989 and it was one of the best purchases I even made. Not necessarliy pretty, but the bolt and trigger group work just fine, reliably and solid. Never a moment worry and accuracy is sorprisingly great for such an inexpensive product. The best ever was a 1903 Steyr Mannlicher purchased for $76.00 offgunshop consignment rack in 1967. It is by far the best rifle I have ever owned and the smoothest bolt I've ever worked. I see them on Guns America and GunBroker.com regularly for $1200.00 |
