Hot Tamale Furgeson Rifle
 

I was watching Russel Thornberry on Sportsmen Afield tonight and he mentioned that his rifle was sighted in 2.75 inches high at 100 yards and he could hold straight on at 500 yards (only about 2.5 inches of drop). He called the rifle a "hot tamale ferguson". I did a quick search on this and it seems to be a 7mm stw necked down to .257 and pushes a 100gr. bullet 4060 fps. I was amazed aparently this wildcat was developed a few years ago but this is the first I have heard of it.

Has anyone else heard of it? And what do you think?

I have read a lil about the .257 STW, I think there may also be a .260 or .270 STW now.

Personally, the flattest shooting round doesn't impress me much, I know my drop offs etc....and can lob that bullet in there. Sure everyone would like a round that didn't drop at all, but let's be real here, can people not put the bullet where it needs to be the first time around? I'm typically dead on at 200yds and i know where that bullet will be at 300, 400, 500.

Even the 7mm STW is a huge case for a 7mm, and now neck it down to .257? I think that makes a .257 wby look small, why do we need an even bigger .257 wby? not even a big fan of the .257 wby, and now a .257 stw. also I think youd need a 30" barrel to get full use of that bad boy, haha.

And btw, almost 3" high at 100yds? I think would be like 1-2" high at 200yds, therefore maybe deadon at 300yds and drops another 2.5" to 500? better than others sure, but still think about it, dead on at 300, all I have to say is, if you know what your bullet drops at any distance and you know the distance of yoru game, you can hit that animal where you want.

Only advn I see is when you dont know the animals distance and need a fast quick shot, without having time to judge distance.....but if the animals 500yds away I suspect youll have time to range him and make the shot, and if hes moving quick shot at less than 200yds, just point and shoot.

Personally my ideal velocities are around 4000fps for a varmint, 223 calibers, around 3000fps up to any .338, lil less for .375, but 416, 458 around 2400fps. So a 4000fps .257 caliber is way hot too me and I don't need it.

never heard of it,if you really want to look at some speedy wildcat's,google up the 22-243 it leaves out at around 5200 fps and that is fast,just thought you may want to take a look at it.

He's full of crap. Yes it is fast but not that fast. I'm sure it's a heck of a barrel burner too.
I pluged in a 100 grain bullet with the highest BC I could find published and gave it a MV or 4060 fps.

What hedidn't tell you is that at 210 yards he will be about 4.5 inches high. [&:]
Be at zero at 385 yards
And at 500 yards he will be about 9.5 inches low. [&:]

A much better realistic sighting in would be + or - 3 inches which would put you
Two inches high at 100
Three inches high at 190
Zero at 330
Three inches low at 385

You gotta love T.V. experts.

I would like to see a rifle that does notdrop at all at 500 yards from a zero of 2.75" high @ 100 yards. I am not saying it is impossible. But I would like to see such a gadget perform.....

THanks guys. I had never heard of it before and was just curious about it. I read an article he(Russel Thornberry)wrote about it after the show but wanted opinions from more then just one person.

I pluged in a 180 grain 7mm Berger VLD bullet which has a published BC of .684 and in order to have a MPBR of +- three inches that bullet would be leaving the muzzle at 5010 fps and sighted in to be....

+1.4 @ 100
+2.8 @ 200
+2.6 @ 300
+0.7 @ 400
Zero @ 425
-3.0 @ 500
