243 is called a band aid gun! 30-30 for hogs and brush shooting. Looking at the new leverlution (sp?) ammo you are good out to 150 maybe 200 yards accurate. I wiuld not hunt a hog w a .243. If you want a little heavier achor look at the 444, 450 Marlins, called thumb guns because of the size of the shell. Goos luck, tough decision. All else fails put a limb saver recoil pad on the 06, best all around cartridge ever!
Band Aid.. Huh.. Never heard it called that before.. Can you elaborate on why it is called that?

BULL!!

There is nothing at all wrong with your choice of a .243. HOWEVER, IF you end up going after game bigger than deer with it, give consideration to using a load with a premium bullet, like the Nosler Partition, Barnes TSX, Swift A-frame, etc., for the big stuff.....

RE: 243 vs 30-30

You guys have provided some of the best info I have yet to acquire. I believe the 243 is the best for me because I am a beginner, therecoil is light, it is a dual purpose gun (varment / deer / pig) and I think it is one hell of a targent rifle.

I am still debating between the Savage and Tikka. I don't think I could go wrong with either pick. I want a walnut stock just because it is so much better looking...even after years of use. After the purchace of my gun, I'll stillhave a tough decision on a high power scope.

Thanks. Now I have to decide between the two makes.

RE: 243 vs 30-30

I own 2 rifles in 243 a savage 110 and a remington 700SPS and both are very accurate with very little recoil,I took a doe this year at 368 yards(ranged with nikon range finder)with good results,a complete pass through and about a 50yard run and she fell over.I've used the 30-06,308,6.5x55swede and several other calibers over the last30 years of hunting and a well placed 243 bullet at this range or under will kill a deer just fine.My largest deer, body weight of 217lbs feild dressed fell to my 243 at 60 yards,he just staggered and fell with a huge exit wound and a lot of blood, others may disagree but I like my 243.Cant tell you about the hogs but I'm sure a good bullet in 243 will put them down also. You have a lot of factory loadings for this also from 55grains to about 100grains so you can also hunt varmint and predators with it as well!!! a good all around gun for anything up to deer size animals and probably hogs!!

i can't believe most of what i read. i own a 3030 and a 243 as well as most other calibers. hit your target and boom they go down! if you are responsible with your shots a 3030 with take down anything this continent produces and i mean everything. it's a matter of where you are and where your target is and your skill as a rifleman. like everything else everyone wants the latest. you are not undergunned with a 3030. practice and it will serve up any meat you desire from deer to bear. happy hunting! it's funny years from now you will need a 50 caliber at least for pigs or brown bear! fads-fads-fads!!!!!!!! be a marksman and hunter.

RE: 243 vs 30-30

I've shot 2 nice 8-Point Bucks with my Browning bolt-action .243 Rifle (100 grain bullets) and several Doe's,the recoil is light and it is a very accurate gun and I have used it to hunt coyotes also.My next choice of Rifles would be a Savage .243 with the Accu-Trigger or a Browning 7mm-08 or Savage 7mm-08 Rifle.I have shot a Remington Semi-Automatic 30-06 all my life when hunting and went to the .243 because of the recoil issue...I also bought a older Remington 30-06 bolt action Rifle so I could use the Remington managed recoil shells in 125 grain. As mentioned the 30-30 Rifle is a good gun and the Lever_Revolution shells entend your range even further out.

All I know is I gotta use a .293 Bremingchester Express to knock them down! Anything less makes them mad and they charge me.

I do not see a 30-30 helping what about a .308 in a semia uto or maybe a AR i know there costly but it should be light on the recoil
